Job Details

The team

Central to our success as a firm are of course our talented lawyers, but they couldn't achieve their results without the ongoing support from our Finance team who have an essential role to play in growing the business and maintaining our financial performance.  Our Business Planning & Analysis (BP&A) team, reporting into the CFO play a critical role; they maintain the firm's accounts, set and manage budgets and analyse and interpret financial data that assists with commercial, Partner and Board decision making.

The role

We are looking for a Data Analyst to join our newly-created Business Data Analytics function within the BP&A team in Newcastle on a permanent contract.  This role falls within our hybrid working policy. Whilst some flexibility is available to you (and expected in return), you will initially be required to spend a minimum of 3 days working in the office, with the same commitment from the manager of this role, in order to get the best out of your learning experience.

This new team is part of our wider Finance team, but will be responsible for integrating people and financial data to produce high-quality data analytics to the business to enable Finance and HR-led data-drive decision making.

Reporting to the Data Analytics Manager, you'll be primarily responsible for producing and analysing people and financial data to identify data correlations, patterns and trends which will help inform decision-making.  In addition, you will get involved with supporting the firm's remuneration processes such as salary and bonus reviews.  You'll also be responsible for weekly, monthly and quarterly data production and people/reward system data imports and exports to link up with other business systems, and monitoring and picking up tasks from a shared data analytics mailbox

This is a new and exciting role within our firm meaning there is a huge amount of opportunity to grow and develop yourself, share fresh ideas for ongoing improvement of our reporting and analytics processes, and making a meaningful contribution to developing the way the team supports the business.

What are we looking for?

Advanced Excel skills including use of macros, lookup formulas, pivot tables, conditional formatting and the ability to transform data into visualisations is essential.  Experience in tools such as Power BI and Qlik would also be helpful, but not essential.  The additional core skills required for this role are attention to detail, problem-solving and critical thinking in order to produce high-quality data analytics.

The role will involve working with a wide variety of colleagues within our business services teams (particularly Finance and HR) and also our legal / fee-earning teams.  The ability to communicate clearly and build strong professional relationships across multiple office locations is therefore important.  You will also be a team player who works closely with other Data Analysts to ensure support and cover for other data-driven processes where required.

To be successful in this role, you'll need as a minimum:

  • Experience in producing and analysing data, along with the ability to transform data into visualisations.
  • Advanced Excel skills including use of macros, lookup formulas, pivot tables and conditional formatting.
  • Proven experience working on projects which require attention to detail, problem-solving and critical thinking.
