The role

Sustainability is a strategic priority for DLA Piper Interntional.

We do not have a sustainability & ESG practice or treat sustainability & ESG as a sector – and with very good reason.  This is a systemic change, not a specialism.  To be able to fully harness our ability to assist our clients with how they react to the sustainability transition, we are embedding it in multiple systems and across our service offering.

The Sustainability Strategy team is responsible for, amongst other things, our strategic approach to our sustainability-related client service offering and related strategic initiatives across the International firm. We are looking for an MBD manager to help support the Sustainablity Strategy team. Our approach to sustainability sits across all groups, sectors and geographies and therefore the candidate can be based in any international office and would be expected to have a strong understanding of the the commercial elements that are need to support the various stakeholders.

This is an exciting role for an experienced marketing manager to stretch their skills, work in a role with an enterprise-level focus and help embed and deliver a Sustainability & ESG business strategy within one of the world’s largest law firms, and one which has an exciting and market-leading approach to sustainability & ESG.

The primary area of focus is to work under the direction of the Senior Marketing Manager (SMM) and closely with the International Head of Sustainability and the Head of Strategic Delivery for Sustainability (HoSD) as the primary senior stakeholders to support and deliver our sustainability business strategy.

This will involve adopting a wide range of MBD initiatives and the key areas are highlighted below, however this is not a exhaustive list.

  • Support the creation of and execute targeted cross-sectoral and cross-pillar external marketing campaigns, including events such as our presence at the Climate COP and Biodiversity COP, to raise the firm’s profile and drive revenue growth in sustainability-related service offerings.
  • Deliver internal engagements/events/projects designed to raise awareness of our approach to sustainability and to further the sustainability strategy.
  • Prepare ROI analysis and support development of MI for the senior leadership team.
  • Contribute to the strategy for and manage the awards and directories process for Sustainability & ESG across the international firm in line with country marketing leads.
  • Support the SMM & HoSD in managing the wider Sustainability & ESG leadership team across the International firm.
  • Support and lead on delegated actions and projects from the Sustainability & ESG Steering Committee.
  • Working closely with the digital marketing team, support the HoSD and SMM to create and manage content for digital marketing channels related to our business sustainability strategy.
  • Leverage the power of our internal systems and utilise data analytics, to provide a smarter marketing & BD service and experience.
  • Manage relevant internal networks.
  • Create, update and manage internal Pulse content.

In order to deliver the areas of key responsibility identified above, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Be prepared to learn about how sustainability relates to us as a law firm, being mindful of the fact it can vary significantly depending on the context.
  • Be able to work effectively and appropriately with senior stakeholders across the International firm.
  • Be able to manage multiple complex tasks and projects with multiple stakeholders across multiple time zones and deliver to deadlines.
  • Take ownership of and pride in their work.
  • Be curious and prepared to learn new things, acquire a multi-disciplinary mindset and ultimately contribute to the development of our strategy.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of the wider sustainability market.
  • Encourage and help others develop their competencies relevant to their marketing role.
  • Embrace change – influence others to modify their behaviours and attitudes where necessary.
  • Build relationships with other functions and disciplines within DLA Piper.
  • Be involved in activity which promotes the overall well-being and/or standing of the business; evaluate ethical codes to ensure marketing activities are compliant.
  • Develop and manage budgets demonstrating analytical skills to interpret financial information.

The job holder may be required to undertake additional duties from time to time.

The successful candidate must have:

  • A high level of written and oral communication skills with excellent attention to detail. In addition you will be expected to have strong probing, consultative listening skills coupled with the ability to negotiate and persuade senior legal and client personnel.
  • A strong sense of personal ownership for your work and the ability to understand your contribution in the context of the Sustainabiliity Strategy team’s objectives and the wider firm strategy.
  • The ability and willingness to learn new skills, and take a data-led approach to your work.
  • The ability to display a consistently positive and proactive attitude and demonstrate a collaborative working style; operating both as an individual and as part of a wider team.
  • A deep knowledge of marketing & BD processes for professional services – a sound understanding of new business processes, digital marketing, CRM and the emerging technologies that will help us win and retain legal work.
  • An exemplary professional approach and demonstrably high levels of commitment and internal client care
  • Excellent project management skills and an eye for efficient use of resources.
  • Demonstrable experience in demanding, partner-led international environments, where success has depended on an ability to:

      o   multi-task and work to deadlines;

      o   manage conflicting priorities and expectations in a robust and fast-paced atmosphere;

      o   perform at a consistently high standard;

      o   remain calm and composed in what are often demanding situations; and

      o   see delegated tasks through to completion at a high standard.

      o   A proven ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information.

  • High level of literacy in IT and marketing systems – Excel, Word, Powerpoint, MS Teams and Outlook are essential; experience of InterAction / CRM and design software would be beneficial.
  • Ability to understand and identify with the firm, its objectives and values

This job description is not designed to be exhaustive and can be varied, as required, to develop, or fulfil, the role.

The Department / Practice Group

This role sits within the International Marketing & Business Development team which has a collaborative and supportive approach to working together to deliver on the M&BD strategy to be delivered through three workstreams.

World-class basics: Putting the basic marketing infrastructure in place to allow the firm to better support cross-Location, cross-Practice Group marketing, in the context of our Sectors. To ensure partners and lawyers can self-serve for their basic day-to-day MBD needs, allowing the MBD team to be deployed on higher-return matters.

Focus: Creation of a new three-tier key client programme that allows us to maximise firm engagement while still prioritising resources on our most important Sector client relationships, by offering a sliding scale of support and benefits.

Sector-forward: Working with the firm’s leadership team, to adopt a consultative and collaborative approach to a realigned MBD operation that enables the firm to develop its Sector focus, with less overlap and repetition of effort across our matrix. The aim is to undertake fewer activities but do them better, and ensure client-focused activity supports Sector strategies. In particular, to deliver thought leadership that is truly international in approach.
