The role

At DLA Piper, we have a global client base, and our Litigation and Regulatory Group works to support our clients both on a contentious and non-contentious advisory basis. We have a sizeable team of specialist and highly skilled lawyers advising clients across the full suite of litigation and regulatory matters, including supporting our client the Disclosure and Barring Service in responding to appeals raised by individuals against inclusion in the barring lists. We now have an opportunity for an Associate between 2-5 years’ PQE to support us in delivering that work.

In this role you will be focusing on Disclosure and Barring Service appeals brought by individuals who are added to the barring lists. This is your opportunity to become an integral member of DLA Piper’s Litigation and Regulatory Group on a 12-month, fixed term basis.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Having full conduct of defending appeals made to the Upper Tribunal on behalf of the DBS;
  • Instructing counsel to advise
  • Drafting correspondence to the Upper Tribunal and Applicants and working with counsel in the preparation of applications and submissions relevant to the appeals;
  • Represent the DBS, with counsel, at hearings for permission to appeal, and the appeal hearing itself;
  • Reviewing and advising the DBS on appeal decisions, including advising on any potential avenues of appeal by DBS
  • Ensuring all deadlines are met and having responsibility for ensuring the effective conduct of the matter.

We do not set upper or lower limits of PQE for any of our vacancies. We have however given an indicative PQE as an approximate guide for applicants. Candidates who are between 2- 5 years’ PQE are likely to have the right level of knowledge and have gained the right level of experience needed to be able to undertake this role. Candidates are expected to be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister, qualified in England & Wales and are expected to:

  • Have a strong background in managing Tribunal or litigation matters;
  • Have an ability to demonstrate a deep understanding of the technical issues that are key to our clients;
  • Draft documents using a commercial, client focused style;
  • Comply with professional standards and all relevant regulatory obligations;
  • Have excellent skills in communication, client relations, and team-working;
  • Maintain a controlled, objective and flexible approach under pressure;
  • Be proactive and innovative;
  • Comply with the firm’s systems, policies and procedures in all matters – including compliance, financial systems and time recording; and
  • Knows and understands how to best utilise information and research resources.
