Join our Central Tax Team, who are responsible for providing strategic tax advice, implementing tax policies, managing tax risk and ensuring / monitoring adherence to tax compliance obligations across International.

The International Tax Manager will:
•    Have responsibility for tax compliance and accounting in an assigned geographical region
•    Run and report on projects to resolve tax related issues within the business
•    Identify and manage permanent establishment risk, including risk management systems
•    Respond to ad-hoc queries required
•    Work collaboratively with Finance, in-house counsel, and Risk, as well as working in cooperation with client facing teams
•    Where required, develop controls and task risk management systems
•    Maintain comprehensive records
•    Develop relationships with key personnel
•    Provide cover and support when the Senior International Tax Managers are unavailable 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Projects:

•    Provide support or lead on ad-hoc projects to resolve tax related issues within the business across the assigned region; such projects often having multi-territory tax implications.
•    Work in conjunction with other service areas to ensure other projects appropriately consider tax matters in the assigned region

Compliance:

•    Review of the compliance records for the assigned region including the International Tax compliance calendar, permanent files, territory summaries and checklists
•    Liaison with overseas controllers on local tax compliance requirements to ensure completion on a timely and accurate basis
•    Review draft tax computations
•    Review proposed tax payments
•    Review proposed tax return submissions
•    Preparation of relevant UK partnership tax computations 
•    Maintenance of records for double tax relief claims in UK LLP branches
•    Monitor tax enquiries, providing central tax team support in responses to tax authorities where necessary
•    Review budgeted tax charges for management accounts and prepare variance analysis on a regular basis

Year-end accounting:

•    Review the tax schedules in consolidation packs prepared by overseas controllers and advise adjustments where necessary
•    Review of potential deferred tax provisions in local and group financial statements
•    Consider any current and deferred tax and profit allocation implications in respect of group to local accounting policy differences
•    Consideration and calculation of other tax related accruals and provisions required
•    Calculation of profit allocation for partners, including preparation of double tax relief calculations
•    Preparation of tax equalisation calculations for partners in the assigned region
•    Identify entities with excess profits for further consideration
•    Own and review the year-end NSP calculations for the assigned region and manage the review process for all interested parties
•    Being the primary contact with the firm’s auditors for tax related matters in the assigned region

Transfer pricing / group structure: 

•    Ensure consistent application of group driven transactions in both local and group records
•    Ensure invoices are provided for each interim/annual calculation (according to local entity requirements)
•    Monitor NCC settlement, including cash receipts and WHT applied to NCC invoices
•    Maintain summary of NCC/NSP in sterling and currency for each accounting period
•    Assist in the collation of supporting documentation for transactions and Country by Country reporting
•    Prepare tax documentation for existing offices and on the establishment of new offices
•    Maintain schedule of balances between business in the assigned region and other group entities, including DLA Piper Services LLP and DLA Piper Treasury Services Limited

Tax reserving:

•    Obtain and maintain details of current tax reserving mechanisms for partners
•    Prepare and maintain policies for each tax reserving mechanism
•    Review partners’ tax reserve accounts, including the tax reserve sections of partner position statements each year-end for members of DLA Piper International LLP
•    Calculation of interest on tax reserve balances

PE Risk Management:

•    Monitor the firm’s PE risk management policies and processes, including review (at least annually) and recommendations for improvement
•    Review of high-risk territory list and review of travel trackers for high-risk territories
•    Monitoring client-facing team procedures for any impact on firm’s PE risk and responding to notifications raised as a result of PE risk controls
•    Interaction with other Business Support Groups in respect of flags for potential PE risk
•    Ensure PE risk is appropriately communicated to and understood by the fee earning population
•    Ad hoc advisory work in respect of PE risk management

Ad-Hoc Work:

•    Calculate year-end tax provisions
•    Liaise with the firm’s external tax advisors and auditors when necessary
•    Assist with preparation of reports for tax and audit committee meetings, including attendance at the meetings as required
•    Support other areas of the Central Tax Team as and when required

Integrity

Experience

•    Must be a qualified accountant and/or chartered tax advisor
•    Must have experience of working in tax – ideally experience in a mixed tax role
•    Have a strong knowledge of tax fundamentals across different areas of tax and be able to apply that existing knowledge and experience to international practices and legislation
•    Knowledge of International taxation laws and regulations is advantageous
•    Have strong tax research skills
•    Have transferable experience from other regulatory projects that involve interpreting and implementing complex, technical rules
•    Prior experience in tax strategy, implementation, planning, support and project management will be beneficial
