THE OPPORTUNITY

At DLA Piper, we have a global client base that faces an ever growing exposure to cyber risk.  Our Corporate Crime & Investigations team is led by Partner Laura Ford and forms part of the Litigation and Regulatory Group.  Our global multidisciplinary team of lawyers and operational consultants advise on all issues surrounding cyber security, from building cyber resilience, through to incident response, and post-incident remediation, providing a holistic and tailored client service. The team works closely with the non-contentious regulatory cyber security/data protection team, and as a firm DLA Piper provides a market leading Global offering in this area.

We now seek to appoint a Senior Associate at between 5-8 years’ PQE.  You will join to support the contentious data and cyber practice led by Partner John Gollaglee and assisted by Legal Director David Cook, both experts in this specialist field. You will support existing clients with new data breach of ransomware attacks as part of a reactive caseload, whilst continuing to develop a proactive, cyber “assurance/resilience” offering to our clients.  You will have the opportunity to assist in the embedding of DLA Piper as key and trusted business advisers.

This is your opportunity to become an integral member of the Litigation and Regulatory Group and to assist with a broad range of high profile and complex Cyber Security and Data Litigation issues arising across the UK and internationally. You will work with our global team to drive change, open new opportunities and accelerate growth for both our clients and our people.  

The team is regularly instructed in contentious data and cyber matters being reactive and able to respond to security incidents swiftly on a global level.  The role will be heavily involved in high value and complex disputes including contentious data privacy, regulatory enforcement, cyber security, major incident response and investigations and artificial intelligence regulation.  Acting for a diverse client and sector base, the successful candidate will gain direct experience in all aspects of disputes avoidance, management and resolution of high quality highly complex disputes. 
The role can be based in any of our UK offices but will also require travel to client sites and our other UK and international offices from time to time.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Candidates will have a broad range of work, that will include, but not be limited to:

  • Advising multi-national clients on a range of cross-border cyber security incidents and global data breaches
  • Advise on all issues surrounding cyber security, from building cyber resilience, through to incident response, and post-incident remediation, providing a holistic and tailored client service
  • Advising clients on their obligation to report to the data protection regulator
  • Working closely with the non-contentious regulatory cyber security/data protection team to offer a full service to our global client base
  • Supporting clients to mitigate the impact of claims or other liabilities resulting from an incident

ABOUT YOU

We do not set upper or lower limits of PQE for any of our vacancies. We have however given an indicative PQE as an approximate guide for applicants. Candidates who have between 5 and 8 years’ PQE are likely to have the right level of knowledge and have gained the right level of experience needed to be able to undertake this role. The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister, ideally qualified in England & Wales or a Commonwealth jurisdiction
  • Have strong experience focussing on cyber litigation gained in a leading regional or City firm
  • Have experience working across both contentious and non-contentious litigation matters
  • Have proven experience of assisting in complex multi-jurisdictional matters
  • Have experience of supporting a broad client base on cyber security and data litigation
  • Be able to display excellent technical legal drafting skills
  • Drafts documents using a commercial, client focused style
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of technical issues that are key to clients
  • Recognise and seize opportunities for the firm, including repeat business
  • Build and develop own network of internal and external contacts
  • Be commercially astute and stays current on key legal and business news
  • Have excellent skills in communication, client relations, and team-working
  • Be aware of business development initiatives in the department and identifies ways to contribute
  • Maintain a controlled, objective and flexible approach under pressure
  • Be proactive and innovative
  • Complies with professional standards and all relevant regulatory obligations
  • Complies with the firm’s systems, policies and procedures in all matters – including compliance, financial systems and time recording
  • Knows and understands how to best utilise information and research resources
