Department/Role overview:

This is an exciting and challenging management role within the internal facing Financial Crime and Risk Team at Ashurst.

The Team is based in London, Glasgow and Brisbane. We are an advisory team that considers the full range of financial crime and related risks applicable to the operation of our global business, including money laundering, sanctions, corruption, modern slavery, tax transparency and ESG reporting. We develop systems and policies, prepare training, manage escalations and facilitate audit to ensure compliance with our own obligations.

Your role will be to provide line management to team members, drive the delivery of projects and support the strategic development of this function across the firm.

Main responsibilities:

  •  Queries: Support the team and our MLRO network on escalations across complex sanctions, proceeds of crime and other related queries.
  •  Systems and Controls: Provide oversight and ensure the delivery of a range of compliance programmes in line with British and International standards and relevant regulatory requirements, including but not limited to anti-bribery, modern slavery, tax transparency.
  •  Assurance: Provide oversight and ensure the delivery of a range of first line assurance projects, including external and regulatory audit/information returns and our internal file review process.
  •  Training: Support the development of training programmes across the firm as well as developing members of the Financial Crime and Risk Team to their full potential.
  •  Change management: Work collaboratively across legal and business service teams to improve service, commercial impact and efficiency of the team, championing change management and buy-in of global policies and processes.
  •  Risk and Control: Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with our regulatory requirements and internal policies.
  • Please note that some travel, engagement at external events and work outside of core hours to meet specific deadlines and facilitate project implementation may be required.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with complex Compliance and Risk Management, especially in respect of sanctions and proceeds of crime escalations at a law firm
  • Expertise of counter- financial crime obligations and regulatory frameworks for law firms in EMEA and APAC
  • Management experience
  • A sound understanding of the nature of the work in a multinational corporate law firm, demonstrating an in-depth knowledge of how a top City law firm works, its client base and the markets in which it operates, and a familiarity with the structure of matters it takes on.
  • Strong English communication skills
  • Working knowledge and ability to use Compliance systems (eg Intapp, HighQ, SDplus, 3E or similar)

Desired skills and experience

  • UK/overseas legal qualification (or degree)
  • Proficiency in any foreign languages of jurisdictions in which Ashurst has offices would be helpful
