We advise across the spectrum of legal matters including high-profile, ground-breaking and complex transactions, contentious matters and all aspects of risk. We deliver innovative and bespoke solutions to our clients, domestically and internationally. We provide clear legal advice that spans the globe whilst tackling the cultural nuances between jurisdictions. Our lawyers understand how to coordinate and manage matters in the jurisdictions most relevant to our clients.
We are now offering the opportunity for a 0-3 years’ PQE solicitor to become part of our dynamic Financial Regulation team, which supports our lawyers in providing first-class legal advice to some of the most prestigious and well-known global businesses.
At Slaughter and May, with over 1,200 partners and staff worldwide, everyone's contribution is valued, and we all enjoy an open, friendly and supportive environment. We have an underlying sense of pride in who we are and what we do, and our inclusive culture gives rise to a unique diversity of thinking, which is critical to our success and helps maintain our position as a true market leader. To support our employees in achieving their professional development objectives, we offer an unrivalled variety of learning and development opportunities to everyone, as well as a highly competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. In light of the continuing coronavirus pandemic, the firm has evolved a new hybrid approach to working, which sees our people working between their respective remote environments and our prestigious Headquarters at One Bunhill Row, in the heart of the City of London.
ROLE OVERVIEW
The Financial Regulation group comprises 3 Partners, 12 associates, 4 trainees, 2 Professional Support Lawyers (“PSLs”) and a Practice Development Lawyer. The group advises on many of the most complex and innovative projects in the regulated financial services sector. Our broad experience and regulatory skillset enable us to provide first-class insight, support and advice on the regulatory aspects of financial services transactions and to find practical solutions to the regulatory issues that our clients face.
Associates in the Financial Regulation group tend to work closely with all partners in the group, and also with fee-earners at all levels from across the firm. As a result, you will have a breadth of experience not only in types of work, but also in the different working practices and approaches from different partners.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The key responsibilities of this role are set out below and there may be others which are not listed. You may be required on occasion to work outside our normal working hours of 9:30am to 5:30pm.
Drafting, reviewing and amending the legal and regulatory aspects of documentation
Advising on a range of financial regulatory issues
Giving financial regulatory advice in a strategic context. For example, advice to general counsel and boards on group structural and/or strategic projects with a material regulatory element
Advising on both conduct matters and regulatory capital and other aspects of prudential regulation (including in a transactional context), particularly in the
banking/investment firm and insurance sectors
Reviewing, analysing and providing detailed advice on EU legislation
Providing efficient professional support for partners
Developing professional relationships with clients
Supporting the wider team in developing business and raising the profile of the firm
Managing/supervising the work of others, including trainees.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Candidates for this position must have:
Appropriate level of post-qualification experience (we anticipate approximately 0 to 3 years) in a City, major regional or leading international firm
Broad exposure across a range of significant regulatory matters and transactions
Demonstrable first rate legal/commercial knowledge and analytical skills
Ability to draft, advise and negotiate in relation to complex transactions
Excellent client relationship skills
Excellent efficiency and transaction management skills
Experienced in running negotiations/meetings under minimal supervision
Willingness to present to large and small groups, both internal and external
Strong academic background (the equivalent of high 2.1 or 1st class degree (though not necessarily in law) and AAB at A-level) and a demonstrable high level of intellectual analysis
Ability to develop and work in a fast paced, intellectually challenging environment
Resilient under pressure with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
High level of professionalism and integrity; displaying the highest standard of professional ethics
Experience of working in a diverse team whilst fostering an inclusive team culture.
Desirable experience
We prefer candidates who have broad-ranging experience and have not specialised exclusively of one type of client (for example asset managers)
Experience of dealing with disputes with regulators would be a significant advantage
Experience of advising on payments and/or credit regulation would be a plus
Prudential regulatory experience (for example advising on regulatory capital, both within and outside the context of transactions) would be useful.
