Job Details

Here at Womble Bond Dickinson, we're really positive about what 2023 may bring and we have a great opportunity for you to join our Solicitor Apprenticeship programme in Newcastle.  It's been a strong start to the year for us, especially within the apprenticeship space and this exciting opportunity only strengthens our desire for continued growth.

We know that university isn't for everyone, but that doesn't mean you can't strive for a successful legal career; in fact, it could be the beginning of a successful career with WBD.  We want to make a career in law more accessible to local students who aspire to become lawyers, that's why we're looking for apprentice solicitors to join us in September 2023 undertaking the Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship programme with the University of Law.

If you're worried that this is new, don't be.  We've a great track record in recruiting, developing and retaining apprentices and have been recruiting apprentice solicitors since 2017, so we'd like to think we're pretty good at this. We have our third cohort of apprentice solicitors moving in to new teams in September and our very first cohort qualifying in September '23 so this creates a pathway for us to offer more apprenticeship opportunities, and that's where you come in.

What will you be doing?

If you're wondering what you will actually be doing, we can promise you it's not all admin and filing.  This is a real opportunity to contribute to the future success of our business.  We're training our next generation of lawyers and that means giving you access to great quality work that will increase in complexity as you develop through the six year programme. You'll benefit from real hands-on work experience by spending four days in your respective team and the fifth day each week will be dedicated to study – majority of which is self-guided, combined with attending lectures and seminars with the university.

You'll build a portfolio of tasks completed and experience gained whilst working in legal teams within the business in readiness for years five and six when you'll sit your Solicitor Qualifying Exams and ultimately qualify as a Solicitor.  But don't worry, you'll be supported every step of the way with a dedicated supervisor, mentor and HR support.  We're all rooting for you and want you to succeed, so we'll do everything in our power to make sure that happens.

What makes it great to work here?

There'll be plenty of opportunities for you to get involved with some of the wider business activities.  We have an active sports and social committee who organise regular events which will allow you to get to know your colleagues a little better.  We also have a strong focus on corporate social responsibility and there are plenty of community projects or charitable initiatives for you to get involved with.  In fact, we'll even give you two volunteering days a year, on top of your holiday entitlement.  We want our actions to have real social value impact, and so focus our activity on social mobility, BAME and LGBTQ+ communities. Hoping to give empowerment and unlock potential with Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship.

How do you apply?

We're looking for candidates with good academics; 3 C's at A Level or equivalent as a minimum with GCSE in Math and English at C or above.  Beyond that, we'll be looking for you to demonstrate a few core skills: team-working, communication, creative and analytical thinking, an ability to build strong and lasting relationships and a drive to succeed.  As this is a six year programme it goes without saying that you'll need to have a genuine interest in Law and qualifying as a Solicitor.  Please note this apprenticeship is not open to those who already have a Law Degree or Graduate Diploma in Law (or LPC/BPTC)

If it's an easy decision and you would like to apply for our Newcastle Solicitor Apprenticeship, then get your application in soon; our closing date is 12th January 2023.  Just register with the application form using the link below, once you've expressed your interest there will be an interactive assessment with some video interviews to complete your application. We'll get in touch once our application deadline passes to let you know what the next steps are.  Our selection process involves a virtual assessment day and a mini work placement with the team to give you an opportunity to decide whether we're the right environment for you.

It sounds so good, even we might apply!

If the timing isn't quite right for you, or this isn't the programme that you're looking for, you can keep in touch through our various social media channels for regular updates or sign up to our Talent Communities.
