We are offering a fantastic opportunity for a professional, interested individual to join us as a Junior Compliance Lawyer, joining our London-based Compliance team. 

ROLE OVERVIEW 

We are recruiting for a qualified lawyer from a City or large national law firm. Previous compliance experience is not essential, but the successful candidate must demonstrate a real interest in the area. This is a permanent full time role to join our Compliance department as a Junior Compliance Lawyer. 

The Compliance department is headed by the firm’s General Counsel and comprises 22 individuals. This role will report into a Compliance Lawyer. 

The role will offer an element of flexible/hybrid working. However, it is anticipated that the successful candidate will initially spend a large part of their time in the office. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

As a Junior Compliance Lawyer you will be expected to have the responsibilities set out below (as well as others which are not listed). 

On occasion you may be required to work outside our normal working hours of 9.30am to 5.30pm.

 To maintain expertise in SRA/other relevant regulation and legislation affecting the firm’s business, forming contacts and networking with regulators, representative bodies and peers in other law firms as appropriate 

 To keep emerging and existing developments in the compliance field under review and proactively to suggest how the firm’s compliance-related policies and procedures might be improved, and to support and contribute to projects designed to bring such improvements about 

 To help partners (and other fee earners) to review clients’ terms and conditions of business and other contractual documentation, and to draft engagement letters. Also, to suggest improvements to the firm’s own terms and conditions of business 

 To assist in devising and maintaining the firm’s policies and procedures, and to develop its standard forms, on all core compliance issues – including the regulatory aspects of matters such as: anti-money laundering; sanctions; other aspects of business acceptance risk; conflicts; confidentiality; insider lists; dealing rules; ethical walls; anti-bribery and corruption 

 To deal with everyday queries from fee earners/Business Services staff on all core compliance topics 

 To assist with queries relating to the firm’s business acceptance processes and clearing identification evidence etc. 

 To support conducting monitoring exercises to ensure that the firm’s compliance-related policies and procedures are operating as they should, and to identify ways in which they might be improved (and/or to supervise others conducting monitoring exercises) 

 To devise and deliver training (at all levels) on core compliance issues. Also, the potential to become involved in devising and delivering external training at industry conferences or to clients 

 To assist the Compliance team in considering the expanding number of legal issues which affect the firm’s conduct of its business. This includes, for example, reviewing commercial contracts with key suppliers and other procurement support. 

CANDIDATE PROFILE 

Candidates for this position must have: 

 Between 0 and 2 years’ post qualified experience as a lawyer 

 Excellent academic qualifications 

 A real interest to work within a compliance function 

 Willingness to learn and understand how a law firm is managed and the risks that might impact a firm 

 Ability to build trusted relationships with the key stakeholders at all levels both internally and externally 

 Excellent legal technical knowledge 

 Ability to pick up new legal concepts quickly 

 Ability to make independent judgements 

 Experience of generating and collating accurate documentation 

 Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills 

 The highest standards of professional ethics 

 Excellent facilitation and presentation skills 

 Ability to work alone or as part of a team without constant supervision 

 Experience of working in a diverse team whilst fostering an inclusive team culture
