Job Description

TRANSACTIONAL CONSTRUCTION (PROJECTS) LAWYER

GLASGOW OR EDINBURGH

Brief

Our Construction and Engineering Group in Scotland is expanding and we are currently looking to recruit a talented transactional (non-contentious) construction lawyer with 2-6 years' PQE to join our team in Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Did you know?

We are the largest team of specialist construction lawyers at any law firm in the world. Our Scottish construction practice is an integral part of over 350 infrastructure specialists globally–the largest in the world of its kind. This leading global position is well recognised, having been awarded Construction Law firm of the Year (Who's Who Legal) for the last fourteen years consecutively. Our Scottish construction lawyers advise on projects across the UK, Europe and beyond as part of our core practice.

Our Team in Scotland

Our team is listed as Tier 1 in the Legal 500 in both the Construction, as well as the Energy and Infrastructure, categories for Scotland. Similarly, our team is listed as Tier 1 by Chambers & Partners in the Construction, Energy (excl. oil & gas), and Projects categories for Scotland.

Julia Maguire is recognised for her non-contentious construction practice, with particular expertise in the energy sector.

Michael Allan advises clients on all aspects of non-contentious construction matters, including large-scale development projects.

Nicholas Carlin, specialising in supply chain arrangements in the renewable energy sphere, is noted by Legal500 as being a “Next Generation Partner”.

Those directories recognise us for:

  • being “widely considered to be the pre-eminent firm in the Scottish construction market, offering remarkable depth of talent in both the contentious and non-contentious spaces”;
  • particular proficiency in matters pertaining to the energy industry, both in the UK and internationally;
  • advising high-profile clients from the private and public sectors on major civil engineering projects;
  • our expertise in energy, infrastructure and real estate developments;
  • advising a range of industry players including developers, contractors and funders; and
  • being a regular fixture on large-scale energy, infrastructure and real estate projects, acting for national and international owners, developers and institutional investors.

We have an unrivalled reputation in acting for developers, funders, project companies, contractors, consultants and insurers across the sectors including real estate, infrastructure and energy (nuclear, renewables, conventional and oil and gas), waste, education, transport and health.  We act for major property developers in Scotland and in the UK, over half of the UK's top 50 contractors, a large number of the top contractors worldwide, major energy utilities across Europe and an impressive range of private and public sector clients active in the construction space both domestically and abroad.

Key Clients include:

  • Balfour Beatty
  • Morgan Sindall
  • Lend Lease
  • Brookfield Multiplex
  • Galliford Try / Morrison Construction
  • Laing O’Rourke
  • Hochtief Solutions AG
  • BAM PPP Ireland
  • Aker Solutions ASA
  • Iridium Concesiones de Infraestructuras SA
  • ScottishPower Renewables
  • E.ON UK

  • European Investment Bank
  • Dalmore Capital Limited
  • City of Edinburgh Council
  • Winchburgh Developments

Work highlights:

Recent projects led by the Scottish transactional construction team include:

  • acting as project lawyers for the developers of a significant number of offshore windfarms, including East Anglia (ScottishPower Renewables), London Array (E.ON UK), Beatrice and Seagreen Offshore Wind Farms (SSE), Inch Cape (Red Rock Power and ESB), Triton Knoll (RWE), Sofia OWF (RWE), Moray East and Moray West OWFs (EDPR/Engie);

  • advising Winchburgh Developments Limited (a joint venture between West Coast Capital and CALA Homes) on the drafting and negotiation of the construction contracts for the establishment of this development.

What our Clients say:

The Pinsent Masons team does very good work for us.  They provide appropriate and reliable senior and junior resource to achieve this and support us proactively commercially.” (hub South West Scotland)

They have been involved in this project since the very start, from the early stages of procurement up to Financial Close, and have worked hand in glove with us throughout. They brought with them a variety of experiences and lessons learned on other projects which they shared, and applied to the work they did for us.  They have drawn on this experience to suggest solutions to issues we faced; this was very useful.” (Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm Limited)

They do not just give us legal solutions, they also give actual commercial and pragmatic approaches to problems.  Some law firms just want to give the legal points and do not really understand the commercial needs of the clients.  That is something which I have not experienced with Pinsent Masons, as they have always been very cognisant of our commercial needs, and they really try to work with that in terms of the legal options available.” (GrainCorp Limited)

The Candidate Required

The team's pipeline is such that our vacancy would best suit a candidate well versed in infrastructure and energy related transactional (non-contentious) construction work. However, we would also consider applicants with a strong background in transactional construction work outside of those sectors, combined with a genuine interest in pursuing their career in a different direction.

Overall, the successful candidate will have the opportunity of exposure to both construction and projects work across a wide range of sectors, both across the UK and internationally, so experience and flexibility in that regard is an advantage.

The successful candidate will:

  • have gained experience in a large commercial firm, in-house legal team or local authority;
  • be a team player, able to forge strong working relationships with colleagues in an agile environment;
  • be technically strong and exercise good commercial judgment; and
  • have the interpersonal skills necessary for this client-facing role.

The role is wide-ranging, will focus on and include:

  • developing on-going relationships with an existing client base as well as pitching for new opportunities;
  • developing close working relationships as part of an international team; and
  • the opportunity to be involved in work in the very best national and international construction work.

What will we offer you?

  • We are a market leading, dynamic and growing global team who work together to produce outstanding results for our clients.
  • We invest in our team and have a first-class training and career development programme. Our training reflects our position as a market leader in communications and sourcing. Our training will assist you to develop as a specialist with valuable sector knowledge and the ability to deliver "best in class" services.
  • Early responsibility and opportunities to develop client relationships.

About Us

Our clients don’t simply have legal issues, they have commercial needs. What the best lawyers do is respond to those needs with a mix of imagination and pragmatism. If a business can be made to work better, everyone benefits. This gives rise to the question ‘who makes a great lawyer’? A great lawyer is interested in business as much as law, a person who is bold enough to challenge the status quo and who sees the opportunity in championing change and promoting progress.

We integrate our trainees into working teams from day one so that, from the very beginning of their careers, they’re working alongside and learning from colleagues who, like them, are ever willing to explore solutions.

If that sounds like you, we’d like to hear from you. We think you’ll really enjoy working with us.
