Business Area - Ashurst Advance Digital

Role: Product Owner

Location: London

Reporting to: Head of Digital Products

Role Overview:

Ashurst LLP are building out our product management capabilities to align with our digital strategy and meet client demand. We are seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our digital product team as a product owner.

This role will fulfil agile responsibilities and ceremonies across two significant projects designed to deliver secure authentication and legal content to our clients: acting as voice of the customer, creating, maintaining and prioritising a backlog of user stories and acceptance criteria, as well as assisting the broader team with the project vision. The successful candidate would be working with both internal developers and external consultants in the UK and Australia to help deliver these products.

Reporting into the Head of Digital Products, you will be joining a small team at an early stage of maturity, and as such, this is an opportunity to help us refine and shape development processes. At other times, hands-on work would be very much required, from developing no-code solutions in third party tools to writing client facing user documentation.

Note: the Product Owner role is typically an initial step into Product Management. As well as existing product owners, typical career paths into this role include BAs, Test Leads, UX Analysts, amongst others with experience of working as part of agile development teams. Beyond this experience on paper, being a excellent and collaborative communicator, demonstrating proactive behaviour and problem solving skills will be significant differentiators in our recruitment process.

Main responsibilities:

  • Serve as the voice of the client, representing client needs within the Agile software development team.
  • Develop scope, define and prioritize backlog items (epics/features/user stories) that guide the Agile software development team, and ensure work is focused on those of a maximum value and strategic alignment.
  • Solve product-related problems, make decisions, complete trade-off analysis to stay on track towards business deliverable commitments.
  • Possess a fundamental understanding of end-to-end customer experience integration and dependencies.
  • Assist the broader product team during the visioning and concept development of a product.
  • Develop appropriately detailed specifications for the product features so they are clearly understood by the development teams, including the creation of acceptance criteria.
  • Creating new tools, and maintaining and enhancing existing offerings within no-code development platforms.
  • Onboarding clients, helping drive product adoption, and helping the broader product team develop standard onboarding processes based on client feedback and experience.
  • Assisting across the end-to-end product lifecycle as appropriate, for example authoring documentation and nomenclature both on and off-line.

Essential skills and experience:

  •  Agile software development: Experience of working as part of an agile team in a software development environment.
  •  User story definition: Ability to define and document any and all user stories through collaboration with UX researchers, software developers and the broader team.
  •  Product Backlog Management: Prioritising backlogs within relevant tools (JIRA/MS DevOps).
  •  Software principles and skills: A high level understanding of cloud environments and architecture, front-end UX, databases and APIs.
  •  Communication skills: Communicates clearly and effectively, demonstrates ability to adapt to different client styles and behaviours. Can clearly understand instructions and is not afraid to ask for clarity or challenge instructions where appropriate.
  •  Personal Skills: Meticulous attention to detail, consistently works at a very high standard without supervision. A problem-solver and people-pleaser by nature. Shows resilience and ability to develop from constructive feedback.

Desired skills and experience

  • Working in a software development environment either supporting or within legal or professional services firms.
  • Passionate about Product Development and Product Management, not just what we build but understanding customer needs as to why we build them, and developing processes of how we build.
  • Flexible, willing to adapt your approach to the audience and circumstances, and able to harness ambiguity to shape new opportunities and approaches.
  • Experience with Design Thinking, Lean Start Up methodologies.
