Job description

We are currently recruiting for a driven, enthusiastic and ambitious individual with a keen interest in real estate as a business and investment product and a desire to join a growing and dynamic team determined to firmly establish itself as the premier ‘big ticket’ equity and cross-border real estate investment practice in the UK and Europe to join our London office as Real Estate Counsel. Experience of working in teams leading the real estate elements of complex real estate financing transactions (to include cross-jurisdictional portfolio financings, development financings, and financings across a broad range of sectors including residential, senior living, hotels, student accommodation, logistics, and science parks)  would be an advantage.

This is a real estate role working with all partners within Allen & Overy’s award winning global real estate group.  The work will be diverse and challenging involving leading on high value investment acquisitions and disposals, structured as both asset and corporate vehicle purchases and sales, major landlord and tenant work acting for both investors and occupiers, development work, real estate joint ventures, loan portfolios and the real estate aspects of finance transactions. The role will encompass working on both UK and cross-border deals, often working alongside real estate teams in other jurisdictions within our global Real Estate group.  It will involve running pitches, client management and managing and mentoring of existing associates.  It will offer the successful candidate an exciting opportunity to run a vibrant practice and be the go to expert for our Real Estate and Banking lawyers.

Role Definition
The role of Counsel at A&O carries status and credibility both internally and externally.  It was introduced as an alternative career option to partnership, offering increased responsibilities, greater standing with clients, and increased involvement in the practice group.  It recognises individuals who contribute at a very senior level in business critical roles. Whilst Counsel is not a bar to future partnership, the expectation is that it will be a long-term role with progression to partnership in specific cases.

The flexibility of the role permits opportunities to develop specialist skills, develop the practice, improve leadership skills and further develop client relationships and work.  As Counsel you will be expected to manage client expectations effectively on transactions and foster strong relationships 'off deal'.  You will also lead complex and large transactions/matters and demonstrate a high level of technical competence in your own area of expertise.  Counsel are expected to build A&O's profile and work alongside the partners in enhancing the profile of the firm in their specific product area and practice.

Competencies
There are five key elements used in the assessment and development of those in the role of Counsel:

  • Clients
  • Knowledge
  • Practice & Financial Performance
  • People
  • Partnership

Allen & Overy LLP is committed to being an inclusive employer and we are happy to consider flexible working arrangements.
