ROLE OVERVIEW 

We are recruiting for an experienced HR Manager to work within the HR Advisory team, which forms a core part of the wider Human Resources function. The role is a full-time, permanent position. Human Resources (‘HR’) is responsible for supporting and developing the firm’s people to help drive and shape the future success of the firm. 

Our dedicated HR Advisory and Resourcing team provides a comprehensive offering, including end-to-end HR advisory support to all practice groups and Business Services departments, and all non-trainee recruitment. The team works closely with the other communities of expertise within HR and across the firm. 

The HR department comprises the following teams: 

• HR Advisory and Resourcing; 

• Trainee Recruitment; 

• HR Operations; and 

• Learning and Development (‘L&D’). 

The HR Advisory and Resourcing team is the front facing part of HR and works closely with the other teams in HR to support the firm. This role will report into the Senior HR Manager. 

The HR Manager (Business Services) is responsible for providing high quality, proactive advice and guidance to Business Services Directors (and their Managers), on all aspects of people management and HR led initiatives. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

The key responsibilities of this role are set out below but there may be others that are not listed. You may be required on occasion to work outside our normal working hours of 9.30am to 5.30pm. 

Advisory 

 Develop and sustain strong business relationships with key stakeholders to become a trusted advisor 

 Provide high quality, proactive advice and guidance to Business Services Directors, Heads of and Managers on disciplinary, grievance, counselling, health and wellbeing, performance, absence, flexible working requests and other employee relations issues which supports the effective management and development of people 

 Provide regular strategic management information to departments, including the relevant analysis, and continually looking for ways to improve what is provided and how it is utilised 

 Provide proactive HR and wellbeing support to employees within the relevant departments 

 Ensure the structure of the Business Services Departments is appropriate and meets the firm’s business needs including, where necessary, advice and support on re-organisations, restructurings, redundancies and internal transfers 

 Responsible for the implementation and smooth running of the Business Services performance review processes, including 360 for senior management, attending moderations meetings, and proactively looking for initiatives to increase employee engagement 

 Manage the life cycle of employees, to include running induction for new employees, supporting to embed new employees, and conducting exit interviews. 

 Work with Business Services Directors on the feedback collated from exit interviews, identifying themes for the departments to focus on/address 

 Support with and involvement in recruitment for the relevant departments, where required. 

 Work with L&D colleagues to ensure Business Services Directors, Heads of and Managers have the right skills, experience and knowledge to manage people effectively, identify training needs and proactively take forward necessary actions. Facilitate and deliver L&D programmes as and when required 

 Work closely with Reward and Benefits, taking a proactive role on annual salary reviews, headcount planning, retention initiatives and expense forecasting. 

 Proactively identify where HR policies and procedures can be developed and improved 

 Collaborate and share best practice from relevant departments with the HR Managers and work towards a consistent approach across the firm wherever possible 

 Develop strong relationships with relevant departments, the broader HR team, the In-House Employment Lawyer and the wider firm 

Management 

 Management of the Business Services HR Adviser 

General 

 Keep abreast of industry trends and developments, through a strong network of external contacts both within and outside the legal sector, and make recommendations for change within the firm as required 

 Work closely with the Responsible Business and Inclusion team to support and drive forward initiatives and embed diversity principles in all elements of the HR Advisory process 

 Work closely with the wider HR team, in particular other HR Managers and the resourcing team, to ensure the team is aware of developments that will have a wider HR impact, and ensure that the HR Advisory function provides a seamless service to the business 

 Work on and drive forward ad-hoc projects in HR Advisory and Resourcing and the wider HR team 

 Any other duties that fall within the parameters of this role. 

CANDIDATE PROFILE 

Candidates for this position must have: 

 Qualified at graduate level and CIPD qualified 

 Experience of working within a professional services environment (ideally legal) 

 Client focused - with the ability to adapt approach and service 

 Good working knowledge of employment law and best practice HR management 

 Experience of using HR systems and management information 

 Ability to build strong business relationships with internal and external contacts and the resilience to deal with demanding individuals 

 A confident, proactive individual prepared to take a hands-on approach to managing their workload using their own initiative 

 Comfortable accepting instructions and guidance from different angles 

 Ability to work collaboratively in a team but comfortable working on their own 

 Ability to be flexible to ensure the needs of the business are met 

 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written, spoken and presentational, including strong influencing skills. Ability to express views clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles 

 Excellent proven organisational skills, with the ability to multi-task, keep calm under pressure and work to tight deadlines 

 Excellent attention to detail and good use of grammar 

 Proven ability to handle confidential matters with discretion 

 Experience of working in a diverse team whilst fostering an inclusive team culture 

 High level of professionalism and integrity; displays the highest standard of professional ethics.
