Where you'll work:               

We have an established employment practice in Birmingham and Exeter office which forms part of our wider national department. As a result of increasing workloads we are seeking to appoint an additional Paralegal into one of these offices.

The role will support on a range of Employment law work varying in scale and complexity. Specifically, it will involve supporting in fee-earning, administrative and marketing capacities.

What you'll do:

  • Assisting the team with advising a mixed client base of commercial and public sector clients on a broad range of employment matters;
  • Advising on employment matters both in writing and by telephone;
  • Assisting the team negotiate settlements with opposing parties and advising clients on this subject;
  • Preparing trial bundles, disclosure, ensuring key dates are diarised, liaising with witnesses, counterparties and the Tribunal, drafting pleadings and witness statements, briefing counsel and attendance at Courts and tribunals;
  • Providing support with drafting contracts, policies and agreements, researching and drafting conference/briefing papers, and ad hoc administration;
  • Preparing reports to clients;
  • Note taking and taking minutes;
  • Filing of documents, correspondence and other documentation;
  • File opening, archiving and billing;
  • Maintaining records of the teams ongoing Tribunal claims;
  • Assisting the team with data protection advice and assisting in responding to subject access requests;
  • Building and maintaining effective client relationships;
  • Active participation in marketing initiatives including attendance and presentation at client events;
  • Participating in firm-wide, office and departmental training sessions;
  • Ensuring files are managed in compliance with Lexcel procedures;
  • Conducting legal research and undertaking factual investigation;
  • Assisting with general document and matter management;
  • Occasional support for the pensions department;
  • Completing first drafts of internal newssheets and draft bulletins and guides for clients;
  • Dealing with ad-hoc queries and requests from the department e.g., research/finding articles, dealing with library queries; and
  • Business development administration - assisting with the preparation and follow up work in relation to seminars, populating and maintaining databases such as interaction and mailing lists for e-bulletins e-briefings and seminars;

What you'll need:

The firm has a competency framework for paralegals and in particular for this role we require:

  • Strong technical skills;
  • Client focus;
  • Drive and enthusiasm.

  • Commercial awareness;
  • Ability to work to deadlines;
  • Strong communication skills (both spoken and written);
  • Must be a team player;
  • IT, numeracy, analytical skills;
  • Enthusiasm to work in a professional and friendly team and
  • Good interpersonal skills, presenting and client facing skills.
  • Excellent academic record;
  • LLB/GDL/LPC graduate;
  • experience of working on employment or litigation matters
  • Experience of assisting on Data Subject Access Requests
  • Flair for drafting would be desirable;
  • Interest in marketing;
  • An ability to work autonomously with minimum supervision – a self-starter.
