We are offering a fantastic opportunity for a professional, engaging individual to join us as Disputes and Investigations Paralegal, in our London-based Disputes and Investigations Team.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Our Disputes and Investigations (DI) group has an outstanding international reputation. We have an impressive client base, which includes leading financial institutions, global corporates, governments and international organisations. We handle a wide range of civil disputes and proceedings as well as allegations involving white-collar crime and criminal proceedings arising in a corporate context. We act in complex, high value, multi-jurisdictional litigation and arbitrations in the United Kingdom and abroad, as well as handling all other forms of dispute resolution, including mediations.

Our Global Investigations Group (GIG) encompasses lawyers in the DI, Corporate, Competition, Tax and Financial Regulation Groups. We handle the full spectrum of investigations and inquiries work, including financial regulatory, corporate crime, competition and tax investigations.

The DI Group is made up of 13 partners, some 60 associates and 25 trainee solicitors. Fee-earners are supported by a practice support team consisting of 3 Professional Support Lawyers (PSLs), a Knowledge and Information Manager, 4 paralegals, Business Development and Project Management teams. A dedicated e-disclosure team completes the picture.

We are now looking to expand our Paralegal Team. The current team has done an outstanding job of delivering high quality work, as a result of which it is now experiencing significant increased demand. This role involves much interaction with people in the DI group at all levels, including other paralegals, secretaries, the e-Disclosure team, trainees, associates and partners. It also involves working with others throughout the firm such as fee-earners in other specialist groups and members of the Business Development and Training teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The key responsibilities of this role are set out below and there may be others which are not listed.

Bundles

  • Creating, updating and amending bundles (inserting, replacing, updating documents etc.)
  • Creating cover pages for documents
  • Collating documents into batches
  • Visiting Counsel and updating Counsel bundles
  • Drafting emails to Counsel

Court (Trial Preparation)

  • Organising stationery supplies for court
  • Transporting and delivering documents (with trainees) to be filed at Court
  • Preparing the breakout room (coordinate the setup and return of equipment and files)

Document Formatting

  • Annotating, paginating and redacting documents (PDF format)
  • Merging documents (PDFs)
  • Inserting handwritten amendments into documents
  • Formatting Excel files and imaging them

Indexing

  • Creating and amending an index with new documents (including sorting files/documents in a folder)
  • Creating a composite index of indices

Reviewing

  • Reviewing Court documents to create a file/list of exhibits and ensuring all references are correct
  • Reviewing documents on a review platform (for example DocuMatrix) to:
  • Searching, coding, printing and attaching documents
  • Uploading translation pages to a document
  • Checking for specific criteria (e.g. searching for handwritten notes in a disclosure bundle, checking time/date stamps of documents)
  • Applying Bates stamps and page numbers onto PDF documents

Correspondence

  • Tracking, labelling and monitoring daily correspondence
  • Sending a daily update to the internal team on correspondence received
  • Updating the correspondence tracker on Excel with the use of hyperlinks
  • Saving correspondence in PDF format in the relevant folder on the F-Store

Document searches and research

  • Carrying out factual research on discrete questions
  • Creating and saving Relativity searches
  • Supporting team members with locating documents on HighQ, F-Stores, iManage and Relativity

Miscellaneous

  • Copy-checking document sets from Reprographics
  • Checking references in Witness Statements, Expert Reports and Statements and Exhibits
  • Inserting exhibit hyperlinks into witness statements
  • Creating folder structures and filing documents (e.g. in F-Stores and other repositories)
  • Coordinating print jobs
  • Scanning documents to PDFs (including QCRing the images)
  • Searching for better quality documents previously used in a bundle, on the F-Store as PDFs
  • Creating labels for lever arch files, CDs, DVDs etc.
  • Attending trials to take notes
  • Scheduling and vaulting documents and media (discs, hard drives etc.)
  • Creating a tracker for translations, uploading and downloading documents for translation using an FTP
  • Monitoring and maintain various internal document trackers
  • Collating materials for key case issues

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Candidates for this position must have:

  • Strong academic qualifications (2:1 degree or above from a top university preferred), including a degree or post-graduate diploma in law and preferably completion of the LPC
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise work effectively
  • Highly competent written and spoken communication, confidence interacting professionally with a broad range of people, including lawyers and members of Business Services of varying levels
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and pro-actively
  • Ability to pick up new legal concepts and terminology quickly
  • Excellent research skills and an eye for detail
  • Good IT skills and an ability to learn new IT systems quickly
  • Good team player, ability to adapt and fit into a diverse team, reliable, flexible and willing to take on new challenges
  • High level of professionalism and integrity; displays the highest standard of professional ethics
