Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Data Engineer to join our Engineering team within IT in the London office.

The Engineering Team are primarily accountable for delivering the software and applications that Allen & Overy develop internally, and with the help of selected near source and outsource partners.  This includes providing:

  • APIs to integrate internal systems
  • Data processing and analytics to enable data-driven decision making
  • Bespoke legal applications for clients

Role and responsibilities

  • Contributing to the design, delivery and maintenance of A&O’s Trusted Data Platform
  • Championing and raising core data engineering skills in the Data Engineering Team
  • Taking ownership of business needs and delivering them end to end
  • Supporting a DataOps approach, reducing the barriers between designing, building and operating Data Services
  • Communicating and explaining key data and development principles to a broad audience
  • Improving our API led approach for key data services
  • Understanding legislation and working within A&O’s data governance guidelines
  • Sharing knowledge with a collaborative mind set
  • Training and mentoring junior talent
  • Most importantly, this position will need to create and support a culture of continual improvement and problem solving and where necessary, being enthusiastic and creative in adopting a data driven culture

Key requirements
Knowledge

  • Deep understanding of high-performance, scalable, secure, and resilient applications and services
  • Architecting and developing distributed systems
  • Deep knowledge of SQL
  • A solid understanding of relevant agile software development, test and delivery practices
  • Good understanding of programming languages e.g. Python, Scala, .Net, C#

Experience

  • Hands-on experience with data engineering at scale
  • Experience of managing multiple projects and dependencies
  • Selection, design and implementation of engineering solutions
  • Building data services using amongst others, Azure Data Factory, Data Lake, Synapse, feeding from multiple data sources
  • Creating consumable services with curated data sets
  • Deployment of data services using Azure DevOps YAML pipelines utilizing BICEP (or ARM), SQL Schema, Synapse Workspace, Powershell and Azure CLI
  • Visualisation of data using Power BI, DAX and M
  • Experience of working in regulated environments

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of Dynamics and CDM
  • Graph Databases (RDF or Property)
  • Data Science/Machine Learning
  • Real time data imports
  • Working with Un-structured and Semi-structured data
