Job description

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Senior Paralegal to join our Arbitration team in London on a permanent basis.

Department Purpose

We have broad experience across corporate risk management and conflict management, advising senior level board members and executives of substantial corporates and banks. Our global network includes many experienced former prosecutors, enabling us to represent clients effectively in the most difficult and sophisticated government investigations.

We provide a full and comprehensive service in most of the world’s major countries and have dealt with many of the problems generated by changes in the financial marketplace. Our network is ideally placed to handle the growing number of cross-border disputes. It is this ability to manage disputes around the world and to coordinate cross-border proceedings that persuades many of our clients to instruct us.

The Paralegal team consists of approximately 10 Paralegals working across the 4 subgroups within the Dispute Resolution department.  This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in a variety of interesting International Arbitration cases.

Role Purpose

The Assistant Senior Paralegal for Arbitration will be assigned to the International Arbitration sub-group of the Litigation department and will work with the Paralegal Manager, Senior Paralegals and the Paralegal team to ensure high-quality service. They will be regarded as experts in their field, with a full understanding of the intricacies of the various processes, procedures and demands of their sub-group and form a deep understanding of that area’s specific paralegal needs. We are therefore looking for an experienced Paralegal with the ability to become a trusted advisor to the Paralegal team and their designated sub-group. The Assistant Senior Paralegal for Arbitration will work closely with and support the Senior Paralegal for Arbitration, and will report to the Paralegal Manager.

Role and Responsibilities

  • To work closely with, and support, the Senior Paralegal for Arbitration. This should be a partnership, with the Assistant Senior Paralegal conducting oversight of their own caseload
  • To project manage the paralegal aspects of each case and liaise with the Senior Paralegal team to ensure adequate resource is available for key milestones
  • To manage and coordinate deadlines on multiple cases, keeping the case calendar up to date and liaising with trainees and eDiscovery
  • Maintaining an up to date, accurate record of all procedural and other key documents on each matter
  • Working closely with Partners and Associates on cases in order to fully understand the clients’ priorities
  • To liaise with the Paralegal Manager, the Senior Paralegal team and the eDiscovery team to ensure best practice is followed in relation to treatment of client data
  • To train and oversee the work of Paralegals on matters
  • To work with the other Senior Paralegals and the Paralegal Manager to ensure quality control of the Paralegal team, dealing with or escalating concerns quickly
  • Managing the administration of any software packages (e.g. Opus 2) on a matter by matter basis, and liaising with external and internal providers in relation to structure, processes and any required training
  • To develop and maintain advanced IT skill levels on appropriate software packages, including new internal technology
  • With the Senior Paralegal for their sub-group, to advise legal teams on approaches to filings, document productions and hearings
  • To attend and participate in sub-group meetings
  • To work with the Paralegal Manager to improve the integration of the Paralegal team with the rest of the Litigation department and the wider firm
  • To set an example for, and be a role model to, junior members of the Paralegal team

Key Requirements

  • Prior experience as a Paralegal within International Arbitration and using a time recording system (i.e. Carpe Diem)
  • LPC or equivalent qualification ideal, but not required
  • Sound level of computer literacy (including Word and Excel)
  • Flexibility to work extended hours approaching key milestones (eligible for paid overtime)

Who we are looking for

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at any one time and to prioritise tasks
  • Ability to work hard within a fast paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Organised and methodical approach to work
  • High levels of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Positive attitude and style with clients and fee earners
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Good research and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication, professionalism and interpersonal skills
  • Hard working, enthusiastic, team player
  • High level of initiative and a willingness to learn
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to build relationships across the team and the wider department; working well with colleagues at all levels
  • Proven ability to negotiate with and influence both support staff and legal teams
