Job Details

We have a rare opportunity for a lawyer wanting to use their solid contract law knowledge and drafting skills to carve out a career in an in-house environment with a difference. Our own General Counsel team are looking for someone wanting to use and develop their existing skills and at the same time contribute to the huge variety of challenges that face a team sitting at the heart of the firm's risk and best practice strategy and management. You'll be a valued member of a friendly, flexible and supportive team, working together in a way that combines the benefits of being an in-house lawyer with the familiar environment of a law firm.

So what will you be doing?

We're looking for someone with ideally at least 2 or 3 years of experience in contract drafting and negotiation, to work with senior team members on the firm's own supplier and client contracts. But there are so many different aspects of this work that there will be plenty of scope for you to develop the role in line with your own strengths and interests. For example, there's the firm's commitment to its ESG agenda, and resulting need to work closely with our supply chain to make sure our supplier relationships share in our ESG aims and contribute to our ability to achieve them – and to support them in their own ESG journeys. There's the people agenda – it's really important to us that we are a genuinely inclusive and diverse place to work and that's something that needs to be weaved into our supplier and client relationships too as well as our people policies where we work closely with our HR team. Or there's the rapidly changing world of technology and AI, where we work closely with our great tech and cyber security specialists not only on understanding how best to protect our systems and our data but also on how to create our own tech solutions to meet the needs of the GC team today and tomorrow.

Many of our clients are large and complex national or international organisations and our relationships with them are often built on large and complex service supply contracts. The GC team play a vital role in the analysis and management of those contracts and also in supporting the associated client demands for us to work with them on their own ESG and technology journeys and to demonstrate to them how working with us contributes to their own aims and objectives in that space.

Of course, while our GC team may not be directly involved in client-facing work (with which comes the bonus of no time-recording!), they are still committed to making sure that those colleagues who are in that role are supported in providing our clients with superb service and in understanding and complying with the complex ethical and regulatory framework within which that service must be provided. As with all good in-house teams, our GC lawyers see the legal and support teams with whom they work as being their own clients who equally need that superb service from them. And while being lawyers themselves does help in developing that in-depth understanding of your clients' business that the in-house lawyer needs, the depth and breadth of the firm's expertise and the variety of sectors and clients with whom we work with means that new challenges present themselves constantly!
