Local Government Lawyer
About the role and team
We are a nationally known law firm with a recognised and fast-growing local government practice; working with councils right across England and Wales on a full range of matters and well regarded for our expertise and how we work with our clients.
The successful lawyer will join a specialist core local government team but work closely with colleagues from other disciplines such as employment, pensions, procurements, property, litigation and construction across the firm.
We are seeking a highly experienced senior lawyer who is a local government expert and is respected in local government, with a proven track record of advising a variety of local authorities; whether in private practice or in house.
We anticipate that the work will mainly include:
- Advising on governance issues such as procedure, functions, constitutional interpretation and design; reorganisation, decision making and access to information;
- Advising in relation to member conduct and carrying out investigations;
- Advising on the governance aspects of senior officer appointments and departures.
We are firmly committed to a good work life balance and targets for fee earners recognise this. The role is not limited by geography, whilst some attendance in the office, with clients and at conferences and events will be required, it is expected that for the most part this role can be carried out remotely.
About the candidate
There is a need to show significant experience in working with elected members and chief officers; and the ability to deliver clear and practical advice on a wide range of topics in a timely way. A good familiarity with the range of core local government legislation is essential. Experience as a Monitoring Officer will be an advantage.
We envisage the successful candidate to be a qualified lawyer with a background of working in and for local government at a senior level.
We are open to hearing from candidates who are looking for reduced or part-time hours, as well as remote working arrangements.
They should also be experienced presenters and happy to attend conferences and other events.
As the firm is continuing to develop its local government work, we would want them to assist in business development, including writing articles and delivering learning sessions both remotely via webinars and also, when possible again, in face to face settings. Ideally candidates will have a wide range of contacts within local authorities and be well networked.
