Job Details

"They have some very good lawyers. They are very smart, very business-focused and very aware"- Chambers & Partners

We are looking for an Associate to join our highly regarded Property Disputes team in Bristol, rated by Chambers & Partners as a national leader outside London.

This is a great opportunity to join a team who are seeing significant growth in work and a chance to build relationships with some fantastic clients whilst working in a collaborative team environment. You will be joining a successful firm with a collegiate and supportive culture, which makes it a rewarding place to work.

The practice

Our specialist Property Disputes lawyers excel in helping clients resolve all kinds of disputes ranging from all aspects of landlord and tenant to complex and highly technical development and land rights disputes for energy clients. The team handles cases at all levels of the Court system, as well as before Tribunals and arbitration panels, in order to represent the interests of clients. The practice also provides advice on risk mitigation and management in the context of potential disputes and property related regulation.

We have a premier client base and support these clients on a range of market leading cases. Clients include Barratt Homes, Greystar, Western Power Distribution, Cornerstone and Telefonica.

The focus of this particular role will largely be on disputes within the utilities and infrastructure sectors. Recent cases supported by the team in these areas include:

  • We are advising Wales & West Utilities on a complex dispute with the owner of an industrial site in Somerset, which is expanding. Some of the building works, which involved driving pile foundations into the ground, were in very close proximity to a high-pressure gas main, which represented a very significant safety risk.

The team

Led by Leona Briggs who is rated in both Chambers and Partners and Legal 500, the team spans the Bristol and London offices; in Bristol we are currently comprised of 2 Partners, 2 Legal Directors, 4 Associate Directors, 2 Senior Associates, 8 Associates, 2 Trainee Solicitors, 1 Legal Executive, 12 Paralegals and 1 Solicitor Apprentice. We work across office with our London colleagues and the team there comprises 2 Partners, 1 Associate Director, 3 Senior Associates, 3 Associates and 1 Trainee Solicitor.

This role will primarily be supporting Emily Van Schalkwyk, Partner.

Technical skills and experience

Due to the technical nature of the practice, we are looking for candidates who have worked within a recognised and respected Property Litigation team and have a good track record in managing a varied caseload. You will have strong drafting skills and show an enthusiasm for getting to know a client's sector as well as the relevant law. Good project management skills would also be an advantage.

As a guide, due to the nature of the work and the structure of the team, we are looking to appoint an Associate in this area, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience.

Your career development

Like all our lawyers, you will benefit from our multi-award winning career development programme. At each stage of your career this provides you with:

• clear expectations of your role and what it takes to progress;
•high quality clients and work, with early responsibility and client exposure;
• thorough assessment and individual feedback from a range of experienced colleagues;
•robust technical training with early skills based development, increasingly tailored to you; and
•reward for your contribution, progression and potential, rather than PQE or tenure.

Salary and benefits

We offer competitive salaries and generous benefits.
