Department purpose

The mission of the Data Privacy Team is to promote the highest standards of compliance within A&O and to advance and protect the vital interests of the firm. The Data Privacy Team advises on data privacy and information security issues affecting A&O, including:

  • designing and maintaining the policy and privacy notice framework necessary to meet the requirements of applicable privacy laws and advising on privacy aspects of the firm’s risk management strategy;
  • advising the firm on privacy in the context of commercial contracts with third parties and technical and organisational measures necessary to protect personal data;
  • devising and delivering the firm’s privacy training programmes;
  • complying with regulatory registration and notification requirements;
  • maintaining relevant inter-company agreements;
  • advising on, and ensuring compliance with, applicable regulatory reporting requirements.

Role and responsibilities

Allen & Overy is seeking an experienced paralegal, legal executive or administrator to form part of the firm’s Data Privacy Team and support it in all aspects of their work. 

The key aspects of the role will be:

  • Populating and administrating specialist privacy software as part of the firm’s GDPR record-keeping requirements
  • General administration, including preparation of communications and presentations, and the maintenance of spreadsheets, records and reports
  • Liaising with other teams globally to update and maintain internal records relating to GDPR compliance
  • Providing triage for incoming requests for support, addressing common queries and seeking support from the team as required
  • Helping to create and maintain policies, guidance and pro-forma documentation in connection with data protection compliance within the firm
  • Administrating regulatory registration and notification requirements
  • Supporting the Global Head of Data Privacy in delivering the firm’s privacy compliance programme.

Key requirements

Essential
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • A degree to at least 2:1 level.
  • Excellent (and demonstrable) IT skills, including proficiency in Powerpoint, Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrable administrative experience within a professional environment.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels, including with senior stakeholders.
  • A proven ability to work independently and proactively and to manage and prioritise a busy workload.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • A collaborative approach and ability to work well in a small team.

Desirable but non-essential

  • Knowledge and experience of data protection compliance work.  

This position is offered as a 6 month fixed term contract.
