Job Details

We are recruiting a corporate insurance solicitor to join our corporate and M&A group.

The group

The corporate insurance and pension de-risking team at Macfarlanes comprises two partners, one senior counsel, three solicitors and two trainees. The core focus of the practice is to advise on large and complex defined benefit pension de-risking transactions, usually acting for insurers and reinsurers. Clients include several of the largest and most significant insurers and reinsurers in the sector. In addition, the team handles a broad range of insurance-related matters, including assisting with the insurance aspects of corporate transactions, litigation and restructuring matters, policy wordings and specialist insurance regulatory questions.

Andrew Barton, head of insurance, is a market-leading practitioner in this dynamic and expanding sector and has grown the practice over the past four years. The team has worked on some of the highest profile insurance transactions during that time. We are keen to recruit a solicitor with 1 to 3 years’ PQE to join the team.

The team forms part of Macfarlanes’ highly-regarded Corporate and M&A Group, which comprises 19 partners, 43 solicitors, three professional support lawyers, seven trainees and three paralegals. The Corporate and M&A team covers a broad range of work including private equity transactions, public and private M&A, corporate finance (including equity capital markets) and general corporate advisory.

The role

The role will include working on specialised and technically challenging insurance and reinsurance matters with a particular focus on insurance-based pension risk transfer transactions, alongside more broadly-based corporate insurance work. You will have the opportunity to work on pension buy-ins, buy-outs, longevity swaps and reinsurance arrangements and their associated collateral arrangements. The nature of corporate insurance work means that it often intersects with more general work (e.g. M&A, joint ventures, W&I insurance and D&O insurance).

The candidate

The right candidate will be self-motivated, have enthusiasm for challenging transactional work and be committed to helping us continue to develop our practice. Strong academics are essential, an eagerness to take on responsibility (as client contact will be encouraged) and to seek to realise their ambitions through the self-development of their technical and soft skills.

Experience in insurance, reinsurance or pensions matters is desirable but not essential as Andrew will mentor and train the successful applicant. Experience (appropriate to the candidate’s level of qualification) of corporate transactions or advisory work is essential, along with a desire to specialise in this key financial sector.

Strong academic qualifications from A Levels are essential, with a minimum 2:1 degree (or equivalent).

We are recognised for the quality of our work, and the quality of our solicitors is an essential element of this – any recruitment will only be made if this high standard is met.

Please note that this job description is not exhaustive and may vary in line with changes in the team’s objectives and firm’s policy.

Our commitment to inclusion

At Macfarlanes we understand the importance of an inclusive culture, the continued development of which has been identified as one of our key priorities. Our focus is to foster an inclusive culture throughout the firm, from entry level to partnership. It is about recruiting, retaining and promoting all groups in the firm fairly, and we are continually reviewing our processes to ensure that everyone has the same chance to develop and advance. An inclusive, forward-thinking culture also enables us to provide innovative solutions to our clients.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, bringing different perspectives and experiences, making Macfarlanes an exciting and stimulating place to work. We seek to recruit the best candidates, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity, background, religion, physical abilities, sexual orientation or any other characteristic.

Company

About Macfarlanes

We are a distinctive London-based law firm with a unique combination of services built and shaped around the needs of our clients. Our unrivalled blend of expertise, agility and culture means we have the flexibility to meet their most challenging demands and adapt to the changing world around us. While many of our services can be found at other firms, the mix cannot.

We find, recruit and train talented people from all backgrounds, building careers for the long term, to one day shape and lead the firm. We know each other personally which means we work together with more cohesion, and less formality. Our culture is thoughtful, challenging and supportive, and we are a place where everyone, at whatever level, can thrive. We remain focused on equal treatment in recruitment, retention and promotion.

What this means for you

Offering a partner-led service enables our fee earners to learn and develop through working closely with a senior member of the team. Our size means that you will often be very close to the front line or in a client facing role, gaining a greater insight into the issues facing our clients.

We expect all our fee earners to assume real responsibility, as well as to participate in client and business development activities. That means wider exposure for you and a steep learning curve.

Our matters often have a cross-border element, so our fee earners frequently liaise with global businesses and specialists in overseas jurisdictions.

The importance we place on the development of our fee earners’ legal and commercial skills has allowed us to develop the excellent reputation we have – we believe our education and training programme is second to none.

We all work together as part of a cohesive and supportive team, with the firm recognising, appreciating and rewarding the efforts of its employees.
