Purpose of role

The Legal Cashier will be responsible assisting in the day to day operations of the cashiers team and for ensuring that all client and office account transactions comply with SRA Accounts Rules and the Firms own internal accounting procedures.


  • Processing and posting of Client and Office a/c CHAPS/SWIFT/BACS payments as needed including checking and releasing on various banking systems and BACS
  • Processing of client to client transfers, client to office transfers
  • Complete cashiering work on behalf on our associated firm Portrait Solicitors and make sure everything is posted and completed in a timely manner in line with SRA Accounts Rules
  • Dealing with all aspects of Counsel and Expert Fees including VAT receipts
  • Maintain and reconcile the firms currency floats and deal with currency orders through firms provider Thomas Exchange
  • Assisting Warsaw AP team with Chrome River/vendor queries
  • To ensure all bank accounts are properly reconciled on a timely basis.
  • To work with Fee Earners and Partners to ensure they comply with their obligations regarding SRA Accounts Rules.
  • To assist in the review of various exception reports to ensure SRA Accounts Rules are not breached.
  • To assist other members of the team with complex or problematic queries as they arise.
  • Provide cover for other members of the team when needed
  • Ensure filing is kept up to date
  • Assisting the Cashiers Supervisor and/or Manager with any ad hoc duties, as appropriate
  • To maintain all bank mandates and be responsible for a central register of all account details.
  • To liaise and work with the firms banking relationship teams as needed
  • To ensure all procedures are followed and that transactions comply with SAR.
  • To liaise and work with the Firms auditors re the interim and final audits.
  • To maintain good working relationships with the cashiers teams in other UK offices and international offices

Required experience, skills and attributes

  • A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the Solicitors Accounts Rules (essential)
  • Possesses the confidence to deal effectively with Partners, and to discuss their files
  • Experience of an online expense management tool (eg Chrome River) would be advantageous
  • Able to prioritise and multi-task particularly when working under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Methodical approach to work with a strong focus on accuracy
  • Hardworking and enthusiastic approach to work; professional in outlook, attitude and appearance
  • Confident using MS Office, including Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of the Elite accounts system would be an advantage
  • Basic knowledge of VAT
  • Flexible and prepared to work additional hours at month, quarter and year ends

Personal skills / attributes:

  • Previous experience as a Legal Cashier essential
  • Able to interact positively at all levels within the firm and a good team player.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to make decisions and remain calm while under pressure – particularly when dealing with difficult situations
  • Proactive with a "can-do" attitude in all areas, with a strong sense of self-motivation.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Solicitors Accounts Rules
  • Experience of online banking platforms ideally RBS Bankline
  • Can clearly explain problems and issues to others and contribute to their resolution
  • Able to demonstrate excellent client/customer facing skills, with a good understanding of general business needs
  • Able to prioritise and multi-task particularly when working under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances
  • Can demonstrate confidence and resilience to overcome obstacles to deliver what is required
  • Can demonstrate initiative and the ability to be proactive, while also being able to follow instructions and provide support to the Cashiers Supervisor and Manager
