Overview:

This is a Commercial Contracts/TMT role with a difference.

Ashurst is investing heavily in its Digital Economy Transactions Group as it looks to position itself at the forefront of the second generation of TMT.  We advise traditional players in the telecoms, media and technology sectors, as well as more widely on the issues faced by all businesses in the face of the disruption and new opportunities brought about by the developing Digital Economy.

At its core, the Digital Economy Transactions Group within London is led by a team of four partners with recognised expertise across telecoms, media, technology, outsourcing and data.  The group forms part of a wider cross-practice, international team.

Sitting within the wider Legal team in Glasgow, we successfully established a commercial contracts capability in our Glasgow office in 2017, working as an integrated part of our Digital Economy Transactions Group. The team has been a great success, and we are now looking to expand our capability, with particular focus on IT and commercial contracts expertise.

This new role is a further example of Ashurst continuing to grow and extend the range of legal services which it provides from its Glasgow office.

This role will provide direct "on the ground" assistance to clients in areas of commercial contracts and TMT work. The work performed by the Legal team in Glasgow is primarily assisting clients from the London office (and, in some circumstances, clients from our Australian offices).  Accordingly this role provides a fantastic opportunity to lawyers who are interested in doing "City work" while based out of Glasgow.

Representative clients:

Bank Of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, BP, Credit Agricole, Crossrail, Facebook, Google, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Intel, Interserve, Letterone Technology, Lebara, Manulife, Markit, Merlin Entertainment, NBNC, News Corp, NM Rothschild & Sons, NTT Communications, O2, Oaktree, Oaktree Capital Management, Odeon, Rakuten, Royal Mail, Softcat, Virgin Media, William Hill, VimpleCom, Xchanging.

Job overview:

We are looking for an Associate to join this new team and play a key role in the development of Ashurst's commercial contracts and TMT capability.  This represents an exciting opportunity to be part of a developing, strategic, practice.

Essential skills and experience:

The successful candidate is likely to:

  • have strong evidence of previous experience in a wide range of commercial contract activity, including (for example) supply contracts, agency and distribution agreements, terms and conditions of purchase and sale, transitional services agreements, consultancy agreements, IP, IT and software licensing agreements, and an understanding of the key specialist areas within each of these contracts including data protection and privacy provisions;
  • have private practice experience or in-house experience in a role which has involved a significant element of drafting and negotiation of a broad range of commercial contracts;
  • be technically strong;
  • be a real team player; and
  • although not essential, previous experience in TMT (and specifically IT) related work and qualification in English law would be beneficial.

Career advancement:

An established career path framework is in place clearly defining expectations and outlining opportunities for promotion. Our goal is to grow and expand this team which will provide new opportunities for increased responsibility and personal development.

Secondment opportunities:

Opportunities often arise for solicitors to spend time on secondment in house with a key client of the firm. From time to time, secondment opportunities also come up within other Ashurst offices in London, Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.
