Role: Business Analyst ( Data Strategy)

Location: Based at Ashurst's Glasgow office.  Some national and international travel may be required from time to time

Reporting to: Lead Business Analyst & Head of Data Governance  

Hours of work:

Monday to Friday  9.00 to 17.30, however flexibility required

Department/ Role Overview: 

The BSR2020 programme is a core part of the firm's business plan to help drive performance to 2020, and will enable the firm to build and provide market leading business services.  This includes making the development of an enterprise wide data strategy that will transform Ashurst into a data driven organisation through the introduction of the governance, processes, technology (including automation and AI), tools and capabilities required to manage the firm-critical data and deliver real value from it.  This role is key to that objective and the role holder will be well placed to play an active role in the firm.  This role will suit someone who has experience of strategy development, especially data strategy or who has experience of working on Analytics, Data quality, or Data Warehousing projects.

Main responsibilities

  • Undertake business analysis work in relation to existing data issues
  • Plan and conduct data capability workshops with key stakeholders
  • Gather and document business and functional requirements
  • Assist the Head of Data in assessing the as-is against good practice
  • Assist the Head of Data in developing an implementation roadmap
  • Develop Requirements Management Plans
  • Arrange and manage requirement reviews
  • Prepare appropriate documentation and supporting materials in relation to specific projects
  • Adhere to Ashurst's project methodology
  • Assist with project management tasks and take responsibility for delivery of this project
  • Undertake business analysis work in relation to existing data issues

Risk and Control: Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with our regulatory requirements and internal policies.

Essential Skills and experience:

  • Previous experience as a Business Analyst with a proven track record of successful project delivery in a professional services company, ideally a law firm.
  • A strong understanding of the role of data within a professional services company
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Able to listen to and understand customer requirements
  • Able to operate within a project brief and to follow existing methodologies
  • Able to provide project management on own projects where there is no dedicated PM: defining and planning the project, risk and issue management and reporting.
  • Working knowledge of different analysis techniques/methods, including requirements definition and specification, ERD/DFDs etc
  • Good knowledge of testing approaches/methods, and experience of devising and running testing procedures
  • Awareness/exposure to different software development life cycles and methods
  • Produce high level solutions/approaches, requiring systems analysis and design skills
  • High level of familiarity with MS Office as a production tool
  • Able to handle multiple tasks
  • Full project lifecycle experience
  • Detail oriented with an ability to work accurately and efficiently even when under pressure
  • Ability to complete set tasks with minimal supervision
  • Tactful and diplomatic when in pressured situations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Uses initiative - 'can do' approach
  • Client focused

Desired skills and experience

  • Previous experience working in a data driven organisation
  • A good technical background
  • Working within a structured project framework
  • Knowledge of legal back office systems such as Document Management, HR and Practice Management systems
  • Familiar with MS Office for documentation
  • Familiar with ITIL, Prince 2, Agile
  • Flowchart and data-flow diagramming
  • An understanding of Data Protection requirements
