Role: Corporate Business Development Manager

Location: Based at Ashurst’s London offices. Occasional travel to other Ashurst offices

Reporting to: Senior Business Development Manager

Hours of work: Core hours are Monday to Friday 9.30am - 5.30pm with flexiblity required to support business need

Department/ Role Overview:

To provide high quality and effective business development support for lawyers in the corporate transactions (CT) team and corporate focused industries, including CRM responsibilities, preparing pitch proposals, marketing collateral, managing events and contributing to and leading on significant ad-hoc projects (client targeting, practice growth initiatives etc).

We are looking for an accomplished, credible and passionate Business Development Manager (BDM) to harness the power of our network and consolidate client offering across the corporate transactions practice, specifically to the public and private M&A and equity capital markets groups. Working alongside the Firm's Marketing and Business Development function, the BDM will be expected to deliver targeted, appropriate, tailored and sophisticated business development activity in pursuit of the corporate practice's growth objectives. To this end the BDM will have demonstrable experience in leading the development of strategic business development initiatives, to include fee generation and brand building activities. 

Main responsibilities:

  • Business planning – work alongside corporate partners to ensure that business plans are focused and considered. Execution of agreed BD plans.
  • Cross practice initiatives – working with partners throughout the firm to co-ordinate our corporate practice, ensure a holistic client experience and delivery high quality BD initiatives.
  • Client targeting – take a thoughtful and dynamic approach to attracting new clients to the firm. Work closely with partners to support their efforts.
  • Pitching - working closely with our central pitch team, develop engaging pitch material which is truly client centric and supporting partners in capitalising on opportunities.
  • Client Relationship Management - play an active role in the firm’s Client Relationship Management Programme, working closely with our Industry BD teams ensuring that potential opportunities for developing our client offering to the firm’s most significant clients are identified and progressed. Evaluate potential client pursuit opportunities for key corporate clients outside the priority programme and use your knowledge of the market and the practice to proactively suggest ideas for client development.
  • Content and thought leadership – working with the Expertise lawyers and fee-earner community and the communications, digital, design, PR and practice stream & industry BD teams, to shape and deliver engaging, insightful, targeted and thought-provoking content.
  • Digital Communications – engaging with fee earners and our digital team to ensure that all digital platforms are fully utilised to communicate with our clients and other external stakeholders.
  • Awards and submissions – support the corporate practice in ensuring that submissions for awards and directories represent the very best of the firm.
  • Training – working with L&D to deliver BD training to support staff and fee earners.
  • Conferences and strategic sponsorships – working closely with fee earns to evaluate sponsorship and profile raising opportunities.
  • Events - working closely with the events team, provide strategic advice on corporate led events, including hospitality, entertainment, seminars and conferences to ensure maximum ROI.

Discipline in operations

  • Contribute to and lead various central marketing and business development initiatives
  • Provide high quality pro-active business development support in a timely and professional manner for partners and associates in the practice
  • To improve the efficiency of our systems for winning, keeping and cross-selling clients, so that tasks are performed quickly and to a high standard
  • Manage the production of pitches with great attention to detail and to agreed deadlines. Organise and manage rehearsals for presentations
  • Ensure all materials, pitch records, experience statements and contact/mailing lists are clean, up to date and easily accessible and that these materials are tailored to the particular opportunities presented by each client
  • Manage the distribution of promotional materials including the effective management and compilation of targeted mailing lists
  • Maintain the website content, ensuring practice overviews, team profiles and press releases are up to date
  • Maintain department marketing diary with all key industry events and directory submissions, keeping key stakeholders updated
  • Liaise with partners to draft directory/league table submissions, ensuring all submissions are appropriate and consistent with the department's key messages

Distinctive culture:

  • Liaise with lawyers on a regular basis to keep up to date with what's happening in the department and to facilitate information flow around the finance practice
  • Take responsibility for your business development function without constant supervision by partners or the senior BDM
  • Build close working relationships with other regions, and BD teams across the firm
  • Act as an advocate for the BD department at practice level, ensuring key messages, brand strategy and marketing output in all its forms is properly understood and appreciated by partners and lawyers
  • Work effectively as a team with the whole BD department, sharing best practice initiatives and providing innovative suggestions across practices
  • Assist with BD department projects as required

Risk and Control: Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with our regulatory requires and internal policies.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Degree educated
  • Substantial BD experience gained either in a B2B or professional services role
  • Ability to manage lots of data and information and to look beyond the data and analyse it
  • Ability and willingness to take the initiative and challenge status quo
  • Proven ability to manage multiple deliverables within a tight timeframe and deliver high quality work
  • Demonstrable confidence to develop strong working relationships with the partners, associates, expertise lawyers and all members of the BD team
  • Ability to build strong business relationships with internal and external clients and the resilience to deal with demanding individuals
  • Ability to be proactive, entrepreneurial and push ahead
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written, spoken and presentational
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Pro-active approach to defining needs and delivering solutions
  • Willingness to provide feedback, share information and contribute ideas and suggestions as necessary
  • Demonstrable flexibility to deal confidently with changes in requirements
  • Willingness to meet the demands of the role through extended hours when required
