We are seeking an Associate to join our highly regarded national planning team. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a well-respected team who have just been named in the Top 10 Planning Law Firms in the annual Planning Law Survey.

The role

The role is based in the Bristol office with work nationally working mainly between Bristol, London and Reading. You will join an established team supporting on complex infrastructure  projects with a mix of transactional and advisory tasks. You will be encouraged to take a lead on matters and have direct client contact, whilst still being given full support to develop your skills under supervision. The team are collegiate and supportive and you will be given opportunities to fully contribute to the future growth of the team. The practice

Our planning practice operates nationally from our Bristol and London offices. With a focus on national infrastructure projects, particularly in energy and transport, commercial and residential development. The team advise on complex strategic development and support clients on all aspects of planning, compulsory purchase and environmental issues. Our work includes contentious and non-contentious planning including judicial review, planning appeals and lands tribunal.

We have an enviable client base which includes RWE Npower, Scottish and Southern Energy, Western Power Distribution, Union Jack Oil PLC, Unite Students, Marks and Spencer, Welbeck Strategic Land, IDI Gazeley, Ptarmigan Strategic Land, Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes, Linden Homes, Taylor Wimpey Homes and Bloor Homes.

The team

The team is led by Chambers ranked partner Neil Bromwich. The team is based across our Bristol & London offices and is made up of 1 further partner, 2 Associate Directors, 1 Senior Associate, 1 Associate, 2 Trainee Solicitors and 1 Paralegal.

The work

We are advising Union Jack Oil PLC on a significant onshore oil & gas prospect site (Wressle), including advice to the client on legal aspects of the local authority's decision-making powers to refuse planning permission.

We provided legal advice to Gwent Solar Partnership on its successful application for a 50MW solar farm (Llanwern Solar project) on the Gwent levels near Newport, South Wales. Notably, the application was made under the new planning regime in Wales for Developments of National Significance (DNS).

We are advising M&S on planning aspects of numerous Simply Food store developments nationwide as the client rationalises its portfolio to suit changing high street business dynamics.

We have advised Countryside Properties as the partner of Chichester District Council in the development of a significant strategic land site for 1,500 new homes at Tangmere, near Chichester.

We are advising Gazeley on the Development Consent Order and Compulsory Acquisition of land for Rail Central, a joint venture with Ashfield Land, to develop a proposed new 7 million sq ft Strategic Rail Freight Interchange in Northamptonshire at a cost of £700 million.

We have advised St Modwen Development Limited in connection with the complex planning aspects of a strategic 1 million sq ft warehouse development located adjacent to Junction 17 of the M4.

We are advising Baylis Estates in relation to the compulsory acquisition of land for the construction of the MetroBus project, a new public transport system connecting Bristol and South Gloucestershire, sited adjacent to the Mall at Cribbs Causeway.

Technical skills and experience

You will have gained experience of a wide range of Planning matters at a well-respected City or National firm. You will be highly motivated and interested in getting involved in a broad range of work. Due to the nature of the work and the structure of the team, we are looking to an Associate lawyer, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience.
