THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Marketing & Business Development Manager will provide strategic and business planning support ensuring the preparation and delivery of effective, dynamic marketing and business development plans designed to achieve the business objectives of the Consumer Goods and Retail Sector Group.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide coaching/mentoring/consultancy to the sector group leader and key stakeholders across the International sector team 
  • Develop and build sector specific key client and industry relationships, participating in client reviews when necessary and providing account management support to the sector's growth clients 
  • Contribute to the development and content of the business development and communications strategy across the international sector encouraging collaboration, innovation and client service delivery 
  • Work in partnership with the US sector team to ensure business development activity is aligned and collaboration encouraged 
  • Manage the firm's external relationships with industry bodies such as the British Retail Consortium and Retail Week, ensuring opportunities are identified and maximized 
  • Prepare the sector's marketing budget bid and ensure allocated budgets are effectively handled and that investment is targeted at agreed priorities 
  • Work in partnership with practice group business development colleagues to effectively roll out new products and promote group specialisms to the sector, internationally 
  • Ensure all major sector pitches are effectively handled, coaching those partners and lawyers involved in major business development activity 
  • Effectively resource sector business development requirements by utilizing the assigned sector marketing support, shared services and other business support functions 
  • Drive sector cross-sharing, client targeting and participate in key client programmes

The job holder may be required to undertake additional duties from time to time.

Key responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Define information requirements and lead the information gathering process 
  • Develop a detailed understanding of the organisation and its environment 
  • Promote strong market orientation; influence strategy formation and investment decisions 
  • Specify and direct the marketing planning process 
  • Develop and direct an integrated marketing communications strategy 
  • Lead the implementation of the integrated marketing communications strategy 
  • Promote firm-wide innovation/cooperation in the development of products and services 
  • Direct and maintain competitive products/services/portfolios 
  • Promote the strategic and creative use of alternative fee arrangements 
  • Lead the implementation of the strategic and creative use of alternative fee arrangements 
  • Select and monitor channels to meet DLA Piper's needs in a changing environment 
  • Direct and control support to lawyers and clients 
  • Promote and create a client orientation and infrastructure for client relationships 
  • Direct and control information and activities that deliver customer relationships and service 
  • Establish/maintain a project management framework in line with strategic objectives 
  • Direct and control the delivery of international programmes and projects 
  • Identify and develop systems needed to enable strategic decisions 
  • Establish and promote the use of metrics to improve market effectiveness 
  • Create a system of critical review and appraisal to inform future marketing activity 
  • Promote firm-wide innovation/cooperation in development and maintenance of brands 
  • Distil the essence of brand and coordinate a portfolio of brands 
  • Provide professional leadership and develop a co-operative environment 
  • Promote and create an environment for career and self-development in line with the Marketing Competency Framework 
  • Contribute to organisational change. Define and communicate the need for change within departments 
  • Ensure guidelines and risk assessments are adhered to 
  • Promote cross functional working linked to brands and marketing activities 
  • Demonstrate advanced stakeholder management and communication skills 
  • Ensure the firms activities are ethically and socially responsible and communicate them internally 
  • Demonstrate advanced negotiation skills 
  • Demonstrate advanced analytical skills of financial information and develop marketing budgets in line with Finance guidelines

ABOUT YOU

The successful candidate must have:

  • Degree/CIM Chartered Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing 
  • Knowledge of Marketing/BD processes - a sound understanding of new business processes, CRM as a concept and the emerging technologies needed to help us win and retain clients legal work 
  • Sales techniques and coaching skills 
  • A professional approach, score highly in terms of commitment and internal client care 
  • Excellent communication and project management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy
  • A proven ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information 
  • Experience in dealing with a demanding workload and conflicting priorities 
  • Be able to multi-task and work to deadlines, be methodical and logical, as well as thrive in a robust and fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to see delegated tasks through to completion at a high standard 
  • Ability to stay calm and composed in demanding situations 
  • Display a consistently positive attitude and adopt a 'can do' approach as well as being able to work well on own initiative and also as part of a wider team; collaborative working style 
  • Be able to communicate confidently and effectively at all levels
