Role: Conflicts Officer

Location: Glasgow

Reporting to: Conflicts Manager, Senior Conflicts Managers and Director of Risk and Compliance

Hours of work -

Core hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:30pm, with flexibility required to support business need.

You may be required to work additional hours to meet specific deadlines and/or facilitate project implementations.

Department/ Role Overview:

Working as part of our Global Risk & Compliance Department, the Conflicts Team is responsible for analysing all new clients and matters to identify and resolve legal and commercial "conflicts of interest".

The successful candidates will have an interest in the business of law and a keen eye for detail. They will learn to provide guidance to the partnership on how to pursue new opportunities in a manner which upholds the relevant rules of professional conduct as well as the commitments we make to our clients across the network.  The role is ideally suited to an individual with a clear and confident communication style, a love of current affairs and a desire to work

The Glasgow-based team works together with colleagues in London and across Australia to provide conflicts clearance as our partners and clients pursue the most exciting deals on offer across the globe.collaboratively.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of the rules of professional conduct applicable in the UK and across the countries in which Ashurst lawyers practice
  • Use your research skills to identify and verify clients, third parties and assets involved in new business requests
  • Apply your understanding of legal transactions to determine the relationships between parties involved in a particular matter; if in doubt, liaise with the partners and lawyers acting to confirm your assumptions about interactions with clients on the 'other side' of a matter
  • Analyse information in the firm’s conflict management systems and other databases to identify any potential conflicts of interest
  • Work collaboratively with team members and Senior Management to find solutions to potential legal and commercial conflicts
  • Record excellent phone notes, legal and commercial analysis to serve as a record of compliance for our insurers, regulators and firm management
  • Maintain the highest standards of data management within the conflicts database, including accuracy of client and party names as well as underlying assets associated with new instructions.

Risk and Control: Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with our regulatory requires and internal policies.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Preferred basic knowledge of Professional Conduct rules and client care principles, including but not limited to, ensuring the respect of a lawyer's core duties towards conflict of interests, understanding and assessing the duty of confidentiality and of disclosure
  • An understanding of the nature of the work in a corporate multinational firm
  • Keen interest in knowing the business and lateral/analytical thinking, exposure to firm-wide legal practices will involve exposure to various types of transactions
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and able to work well under pressure
  • Computer literate
  • Able to adapt to new processes and technology
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to liaise effectively with all level of legal and support staff to assist with the resolution of issues in a diplomatic manner
  • Discretion essential to preserve confidential information
