We are looking for a Senior Associate to join our Band 1 rated Construction team in Bristol. From a very well regarded base in the South West, our hugely experienced construction and engineering team is firmly rooted throughout the UK and beyond, taking advantage of a strong overseas network across our international offices. This is a great opportunity to join a market leading team and have a broad and exciting workload for clients who are leaders in their fields.

The practice

Infrastructure projects are a global phenomenon and our clients include businesses either based internationally, or with an international focus.  We often advise across borders to deliver projects around the world – recent projects have included advising on airport projects in Oman and on renewables projects in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Jordan. Locally, we advise on the most complex and interesting assignments in the region, working closely with our colleagues in Real Estate and Banking.

The services we provide on construction and engineering transactions include advising on all forms of construction contract arrangements including bespoke contracts, advising on construction aspects of funding agreements, purchase agreements, PPP project agreements and agreements for lease, and advising on construction security matters and construction procurement strategy.

We act for all types of participants in the world of construction procurement including consultants, contractors, sponsors, corporate occupiers, developers, investors, public sector etc and of late have developed market leading credentials and reputation in the world of student accommodation development and in various energy spheres.

The Non-Contentious Construction team in Bristol is led by Chambers rated Phil Davies, a partner who has been ranked for his specialism in construction and engineering procurement matters in the projects sphere. The team also comprises of 1 further partner, 1 Legal Director, 1 Associate Director, 3 Senior Associates, 3 Associates and 1 Trainee Solicitor.

The work

  • Acted for Nexterra Systems Corp on a project based around the UK’s first biomass plant fuelled by waste wood. Once constructed, the plant will produce 10.3MW of electricity and divert 67,000t of waste away from landfill.
  • Advising Campus Living Villages Limited on the development, construction and operation of 1000 beds of student accommodation (including advice on consultancy agreements, building contracts, warranties, bonds, and parent company guarantees) for the University of St Andrews and the Royal College of Music.
  • Advising U+I plc on 2 developments in London (Abbey Wood and 399 Edgware Road) and one in Manchester (Hale Barns shopping centre).  Advising on all construction procurement aspects of the developments.
  • Advising Bristol City FC on the £40 million redevelopment of Ashton Gate football stadium including the construction of new stands and a new pitch.
  • Advising on phase 2 of the redevelopment of the Old Vic Theatre in Bristol involving front of house redevelopment.
  • Expansion of the Underfall Yard Boatyard in partnership with Bristol City Council.  The yard houses a number of maritime-related workshops and small businesses.
  • Advising Student Castle on numerous student accommodation transactions across the UK.
  • Advising various investment houses on investments in and the development of energy assets including energy from waste projects, solar projects and battery storage projects.
  • Advising Gazeley UK Ltd on its UK development programme of logistics distribution warehousing units. 

Technical skills and experience

You will have knowledge and experience of Construction matters which will have been gained at a well-respected City or National firm. Due to the nature of the work and the structure of the team, we are looking to a Senior Associate lawyer, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience.
