Role purpose

We are currently seeking to recruit a senior lawyer or experienced compliance professional on a permanent basis. The role involves inputting into a significant product enhancement project whilst also assisting with maintaining the existing product which currently covers data protection, bank secrecy and regulatory outsourcing rules. Day to day work will include product design, commissioning and negotiating updates or new legal memoranda, updating or compiling reports for on-line publication, inputting into enhancement of product, marketing and dealing with queries from subscribers and A&O team, attending conferences, monitoring developments and drafting alerts. The successful lawyer will work directly with two other lawyers based in London and in Belfast plus liaising with local counsel around the world.

Key relationships

  • Senior Associates and Local Counsel
  • Wider Aosphere community
  • Role and responsibilities

  • Commissioning and negotiating new content - this involves negotiating and agreeing legal opinions from counsel in multiple jurisdictions, analysing those opinions and summarising key issues in reports. The ability to reduce long and complex narratives into concise, accurate, consistent summaries is essential.
  • Inputting into the structure of new and existing products with input from key clients where appropriate.
  • Updating the legal content of existing products. Update periods can be busy. Deadlines for updating and issuing new content are critical.
  • Supporting marketing activities and providing support and training to existing subscribers.
  • Key requirements

  • Senior lawyer or significant in-house experience.
  • Wide range of backgrounds from a city firm/highly regarded privacy and/or financial regulatory experience will be considered.
  • Strong technical, analytical and report/opinion drafting skills together with excellent attention to detail required.
  • Able to demonstrate the ability to become an expert in unfamiliar areas of law.
  • Able to demonstrate experience of meeting the requirements of highly demanding banking/financial service and asset management clients.
  • Experience in international/cross border work preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. This role involves daily communication with the aosphere legal and support teams, partners, colleagues in overseas offices and other counsel.
  • Pro-active and self-motivated.
  • Excellent academics.
  • Team working skills are essential.
  • Who we are looking for

The position would appeal to an experienced lawyer wishing to continue to work at a level of service which produces top quality work for demanding clients but without the unpredictability of transactional work. All necessary training to ensure the successful candidate is fully involved in supporting the business at the earliest opportunity will be provided. Opportunity to work flexibly including part-time arrangements and working from home on selected days (following probation period).

    Company

With over 5,600 people in over 40 offices, Allen & Overy is a business doing work of global significance.

Our success is built on the work of talented and motivated people who thrive in a supportive and collaborative environment, dedicated to delivering an exceptional standard of work for our clients. We’re ambitious and forward-thinking, committed to growing our business and meeting the future head-on. We’re not afraid of change, and we believe in challenging the status quo.

What we do goes beyond delivering an outstanding service. We lead the market by creating new solutions for our clients’ most complex legal and business challenges, helping them grow, innovate and thrive. By thinking creatively and entrepreneurially, we challenge expectations, push boundaries and build for the future. We draw on a world-leading network of expertise and a unique platform – such as our Advanced Delivery services and our network of Peerpoint consultants, to set the highest standards for our industry.

Global coverage in today’s market does not simply mean having offices in important cities around the world. For us, it means combining our global resources and sector expertise to work on matters that cross international boundaries with our culturally and geographically diverse teams. For you, it means that wherever you work, you’ll find a culture of inclusion and support – feeling confident to bring your whole self to work every single day. We have developed a culture in which difference is positively valued, and our people are free to be themselves.  At A&O, you're not only valued for what you do, but for who you are.

We are in every sense one global team; supportive and collaborative, but also ambitious and driven.  Our capacity to combine these qualities and provide a setting in which our people can thrive is what makes us different.
