We have a new opportunity for a Legal Cashier (Accounts Payable) to join our Finance team. This is a permanent role and will be based in our Bristol office.

The Team

Financial processing is an essential part of our work and supports our legal teams to ensure the firm gets paid for the work they do.  We are a progressive and ever adapting team, where opinions are always valid and input welcome.

What you'll do

Reporting to the Legal Cashier Manager, this will be a unique role within the team that will operate across both legal cashier and accounts payable work.

More specifically, you will be responsible for the preparation and processing of client and office cash transactions, as well as the maintenance of the office and client ledgers ensuring application of rules and internal controls.

Other key responsibilities include:

  • Ensure all external costs are accurately and promptly processed to matters or the firm's accounts
  • Ensure that suppliers and staff expenses are paid in accordance with agreed terms and timetables
  • Prepare and process foreign and domestic payments from the firms electronic banking facilities (including regular accounts payable and expenses payment runs) on a daily basis from both office and client bank accounts
  • Co-ordinate and communicate the receipt of office and client monies to fee earners on a daily basis and, where appropriate, investigate to ensure compliance with the Solicitors Accounts Rules (SAR) and Money laundering Regulations (MLR)
  • Maintain the client and office ledgers, posting receipts and payments and ensuring full compliance with internal controls and other regulations (SAR and MLR)
  • Maintain the integrity of the AP and nominal ledgers, posting journals and making adjustments where necessary to ensure full compliance with internal controls and other regulations (SRA & Accounting standards)
  • Request statements and missing invoices where appropriate to ensure PL accounts are kept up to date
  • Investigate Supplier chasing letters and supplier/internal query’s responding promptly and ensuring that relevant people are kept up to date with progress
  • Month end Duties, i.e. ensuring all costs and client money transactions are processed prior to closing
  • Assist with administrative tasks as required

What we're looking for

The successful candidate will a proven background in Legal Cashier and/or Accounts Payable roles. This experience will have ideally been gained within the legal sector.

Also required:

  • High levels of numeric accuracy, with strong keyboard skills – fast and accurate
  • Knowledge of the Solicitors Accounts Rules and Money Laundering Regulations and electronic banking processes
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to identify and act on issues which need to be escalated
  • Familiar with a legal accounting system such as Elite, Aderant, etc.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across all aspects of the Legal Cashiers team's work and ensure that issues are addressed promptly, professionally, openly and constructively
  • Ability to communicate and interact appropriately and constructively with customers and colleagues
  • Excellent organisation skills.
  • Good time management and prioritisation skills
  • Self-motivated and proactive
