Job Details

We have an opportunity for a Business Development Executive to join our dynamic Marketing & Sales team. This role will focus specifically on our Digital Business (DB) and Life Sciences and Healthcare (LSH) sectors. With over 40 employees across our three UK offices (Bristol, London and Reading), the team supports domestic and international communications, marketing, sales, events and brand strategy.

Osborne Clarke is a leading International Legal Practice looking after a wide range of commercial clients such as Barclays, Facebook, Siemens and Vodafone. We are renowned for our unstuffy and supportive culture, encouraging all our people to make the most of their talent in a fast growing and exciting environment.

Our focussed strategy and positive working environment have been rewarded by many prestigious awards for career progression, management and culture, including being named Roll on Friday's 'Firm of the year' 2018.

We are happy to consider applicants looking for their primary location to be London or Bristol, although the role will involve regular travel between our three UK offices.

The Team:

OC's business development team provide support to the firm's lawyers in all aspects of business development, including client relationship management and bids. The team is structured, like OC itself, along sector lines, covering all service offerings and international jurisdictions within those sectors.

DB is the firm's largest sector group, with more than 350 lawyers across our offices actively advising business in the tech, media and comms sector. This is the sector group for which Osborne Clarke is associated with as a true global market leader.

The group regularly advises high profile clients in the sector, and innovative and future thinking areas of technology across numerous service lines. For anyone interested in technology, as one of the first international law firms to enter the US west coast market and with a very established presence in Silicon Valley, San Francisco and New York, the DB sector group is an exciting group to work with.

The LSH group are growing in size and focus, and just like the DB sector, this sector is an international group of approximately 100 lawyers focused on advising the bio-tech, medtech and healthcare, pharmaceuticals and digital health sub-sectors.

What you'll do:

This is a challenging and fulfilling role. As an experienced Business Development Executive, you will support the DB and LSH Business Development Lead in proactively building and enhancing the DB and LSH groups through three main activities: business development, client relationship development (CRD) and marketing.

The DB group's passion for the sector is second to none. You will be required to understand the subject matters of the sub-sector groups you work with to support the BD lead in advising the global sector leader and other key stakeholders in implementing best in class BD.

As a smaller and establishing sector, you will support the BD lead in helping to build the LSH group's global footprint and international approach to BD, CRD and marketing.

You will need to be ready and able run projects without day to day input from the BD lead (including pitches, CRD review support and marketing events), and able to proactively engage with fee earners to advise them on effective BD.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working with the BD Manager to deliver marketing plans, detailing marketing activities, events and budget requirements
  • Implementing firm-wide campaigns through the DB and LSH sectors
  • Supporting selected pitches, ensuring best practice in opportunity assessment and pitch management
  • Coordinating internal DB and LSH sector briefings including identifying speakers, preparation of agendas, follow up etc
  • Working with specialist marketing teams (Communications, Marketing & Events, Brand & Design) to project manage client events ensuring they are delivered successfully and within budget. This will also involve maximising, tracking and recording ROI
  • Coordinating the production of content for legal and market updates for distribution to clients and contacts in conjunction with the BD Manager and Head of Client Knowledge
  • Drafting sector award entries and creating marketing content (web copy, brochure and other materials). This will also include working in conjunction with the Digital team to implement social media activity
  • Leading on thought leadership/research projects
  • Supporting the sector CRM programme for key/development clients, including provision of reports as required

What we're looking for:

The appropriate candidate will be an experienced BD Executive looking to take a step forward in their career.

Alongside excellent project management and communication skills, we are looking for someone who has extensive sales and marketing experience, ideally coming from a legal or professional services environment. Sector specific experience is desirable, but not essential.

More specifically, we require:

  • Demonstrable experience managing projects to completion and evaluating their effectiveness
  • Someone who is confident in briefing partners and lawyers on sales and marketing initiatives, who captures clear information for implementation
  • You'll  be proactive in agreeing priorities and identify the appropriate level of importance/urgency for projects
  • You'll be exceptionally organised, with a good eye for detail, highly literate and numerate
  • You'll have excellent communication skills – will build excellent rapport with the sales and marketing and legal teams through face to face contact
  • You'll also be confident to self-assess projects and issues without micro management and to suggest alternative ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • You'll have the ability to multi-task with a variety of stakeholders
  • Ideally you will be educated to graduate level or have CIM qualifications
  • IT literacy: Excellent Vuture, PowerPoint, Excel and Word skills
  • Experience of InterAction or similar CRM database
  • An interest in a role that is a mixture of sales and marketing challenges
