Role: Research & Resources Manager EMEA

Location:  Glasgow

Reporting to: Head of Research & Business Intelligence

Hours of work - Monday to Friday, 9:00 - 5:30. However, role requires flexibility

Department/ Role Overview:

This role is a senior leadership role within the Research & Business Intelligence team. Based in the firm's Glasgow office, this role is responsible for proactively engaging with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring the information needs of Ashurst are met and leading a team of researchers providing decision-ready research solutions to legal and business services teams.

The role is also responsible for developing and integrating business intelligence research capability within the EMEA team, including engaging with practices and business development teams and promoting relevant client and industry research capabilities available.

Main responsibilities:

Team leadership & engagement

  • Lead the regional Research & Resources team, including training, development and performance management to ensure the function has the best people for the job.
  • Act as an adviser and reference point for staff to ensure that research problems are resolved effectively and commercially, provide regular constructive feedback, engage, motivate and coach team members and foster a culture of continual learning, professional development and knowledge sharing
  • Proactively engage with internal stakeholders including Practices and Expertise, Business Development, Learning & Development, Risk & Compliance, Ashurst Advance and IT to understand their information needs and ensure the Research & Business Intelligence team deliver research and resource solutions to meet these needs
  • Actively network within the library community to gather feedback and ideas, to attract and recruit staff, and represent the firm

Research & Learning

  • Ensure delivery of research support services to Ashurst partners and staff across the EMEA region
  • Undertake research to provide "decision-ready" and commercially appropriate research solutions to client queries
  • Collaborate with the wider team and engage Training/Learning Coordinators to ensure the transition to online resources and/or database upgrades and associated training programmes; promote resources to meet practice team needs and show leadership in the development of information and digital literacy initiatives as appropriate
  • Ensure research tasks are recorded in the team's request management system and that research time is recorded to matters in 3e as appropriate

Resource management

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders in the EMEA region regarding resource needs, driving the team's digital transformation agenda and ensuring resource awareness and use
  • Proactively collaborate with practices to understand their information needs and make recommendations based on expert knowledge of resources available within Ashurst and more broadly within the legal information market
  • Collaborate with the Head of Research & Business Intelligence and the Research & Resources Manager APAC regarding major global agreements with global information suppliers
  • Proactively review subscription renewals including usage monitoring, consult regional stakeholders and negotiate with vendors regarding regional subscription renewals, making recommendations to the Head of Research & Business Intelligence regarding subscription renewals
  • Review non-subscription purchases (eg books) and provide guidance and direction to the information resources team on collection development decisions
  • Collaborate with the Digital Access and Business Intelligence teams providing the required input into strategic decision-making and projects as required and directed by the Head of Research & Business Intelligence

Business Intelligence

  • Deliver services relevant to the client and industry information needs of legal and business development teams at Ashurst
  • Proactively develop relationships with practices and business development teams to understand their strategy and pursuits and promote relevant business intelligence services
  • Actively identify and monitor trends and developments in business intelligence such as data analytics, develop relevant skills and test how these developments can aid in identifying business development opportunities for Capabilities and Industry focus sectors
  • Provide support and guidance to the research team in the sophisticated use of company and industry research databases and tools as part of the Business Intelligence service

Policies & procedures

  • Work with the Head of Research & Business Intelligence to develop appropriate objectives and key results (OKR) for individuals and the wider team
  • Regularly review processes to identify improvements and act as an effective change agent
  • Work with the APAC Research & Resources Manager to maintain and communicate best practice service and expertise standards for the research team

Essential skills and experience: 

  • Degree in Library or Information Management
  • Advanced legal and business research skills including the sophisticated use of a range of online databases and knowledge of products available in the wider legal information marketplace
  • Demonstrated experienced building and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and clients
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining effective working relationships with external stakeholders
  • Experience leading and managing teams particularly through periods of transformation
  • Understanding of project management and change management methodologies
  • Excellent organisational skills including planning, scheduling, monitoring and reporting
  • Able to effectively manage multiple competing priorities
  • Confident and professional written and oral communication including presentation skills
