Purpose of role

Reporting to the Marketing and Business Development Director, the Head of Business Development, UK will work alongside the Head of Business Development, Middle East and the Head of Proposals playing a crucial role in implementing and enhancing the firm's strategy as part of the MBD department's senior leadership team.

The Head of BD, UK is tasked with supporting and developing the Business Development Managers and their reports across our Scottish, Milton Keynes and London offices. As well as managing the UK BD team, this role will require leadership on best-practice campaigns and product marketing and a focus on improving our marketing operations and infrastructure. The role will require regular deputising for the Marketing and Business Development Director (UK & ME) and support for the regional CEO on request.

Operating in a dynamic environment, the BD team is tasked with instilling a high-performing, client-orientated culture across the firm; developing new business from existing clients and cold prospects, running proposals and creating multi-channel campaigns through our established client programme.

This is a senior and high-profile role that will see regular working with the region's leadership in the shape of its Divisional and Sector Leaders and participation in the firm's monthly Global BD Leaders call. It requires a proven track record of excellence both in BD technical skills and people management.


·Work closely with the BD team to manage workflow and prioritise the implementation of business and marketing plans for the different groups they cover and the day-to-day challenges and opportunities arising from being part of the world's biggest law firm.

·Work with the other Heads of and the MBD Director to implement improvements to marketing operations and infrastructure including the way we report to the firm's Executive Management.

·Become a central figure in the firm's client programme, working with the firm's Sector Leaders and potentially managing a key client.

·Lead or participate in client facing, sales-driven initiatives such as events, seminars, client workshops and roundtables and attend BD opportunities with partners and lawyers.

·Work with the firm's products (with an emphasis on our Nextlaw offering) to develop, package and execute comprehensive campaigns, prioritising client meetings and revenue-generating pursuits as part of our continued brand building.

·Chair and drive activity through our regular 'go to market' group meetings as appropriate.

·Monitor the firm's expenditure budget, identifying trends and opportunities and providing advice and guidance.

Required experience, skills and attributes

·Strong management and leadership skills demonstrated across a sizeable function. Proven track record of building and managing effective teams.

·Credibility – authoritative, know your subject and confident in front of both individuals and large groups.

·Able to exercise tact and diplomacy in an organisational setting.

·Able to make decisions and remain calm while under pressure – particularly when dealing with difficult situations.

·Advanced BD experience working in a professional services/partnership environment, ideally already at 'Head of' level.

·Strong track record of revenue and meeting generation.

·Experience of working with Partners and BD teams to drive best practice and develop and implement business and marketing plans, including budgeting.

·Experience of product development and measurably successful campaigns.

·Proven client account management skills.

·A background that has included management of major proposals.

·Appreciation of modern data driven and digital marketing and business development.

·Experience of driving through change in a challenging environment.

·Strong commercial focus.

·Ability to interact positively at all levels and a good team player.

·Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

·Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills.

·Able to demonstrate excellent client facing skills.

·Can carry out all responsibilities in a way which supports the practice's values and promotes its equal opportunities and diversity principles.

·Able to travel to regional offices.

·CIM qualification or other marketing qualification would be desirable.
