Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Solution Architect to join our IT Strategy & Architecture team in London.

Department purpose 

The Strategy & Architecture team are primarily accountable for setting the future direction of technology at Allen & Overy. This includes providing: 

  • Enterprise Architecture, technical oversight and decision making
  • Definition and creation of all technology roadmaps
  • Definition of architectural and domain principles
  • Definition of architectural artifacts
  • Technical governance and design assurance across the entire IT portfolio
  • Technology option assessment, product selection and prototyping
  • Technical expertise for projects that primarily grow and transform our business

Role purpose 

The Solution Architect will be responsible for design, development and planning of solutions and services for consumption within the global IT environment. They will be responsible for translation of the functional requirements in to architecture and design artifacts. Post design they will assume an assurance role within the governance of project and programme delivery.

Role and responsibilities 

  • The role holder will be seen as a clear lead for all technical matters relating to applications and the technology portfolio, providing subject matter expertise to Design Authorities and the Architecture Review Board
  • Responsible for the provision and maintenance of domain strategies, standards, roadmaps and architecture artifacts. All outputs are to be stored and maintained in the Enterprise Architecture repository
  • Ensure all strategy, architecture, standards and roadmaps outputs are understood by the relevant teams
  • Assure the quality and consistency of the designed solutions against the future vision, the technology roadmap and standards
  • Champion the Enterprise Architecture function within Allen & Overy and communicate the benefits to IT and the business
  • Ensure supporting business cases are robust so that funding is secured to deliver the required changes
  • Work with Project governance to ensure the most cost effective, timely & appropriate IT solutions are developed to fulfil the commercial and business requirements
  • Provide specialist advice to project\programme teams to enable them to support strategy and architecture development
  • Act as the Technical Lead or Technical Design Authority role on projects. This will include:
    • Analysis of business/information requirements specified and architect solutions required to support those requirements
    • Lead RFP and procurement processes from a technical, non functional, perspective
    • Provision of “security first” options based on user requirements, existing enterprise building blocks and S&A’s strategic requirements
    • Documenting architecture epic’s and technical user stories
    • Provide analysis for technical alternatives, and technical risk analysis for proposed systems
    • Creation of high-level and detailed solution designs that address the needs of key stakeholders from the business, solution delivery and operational areas
    • Ensure relevant teams are aware of the technologies being implemented and the implications, i.e. enhancing the collaboration between teams that are involved in the successful delivery of projects.
  • Create technical architectural documents and technical specifications in alignment with standards, roadmaps and policies to present to the Architecture Review Board (ARB).
  • Maintain & enhance appropriate internal technical IT governance structures that will work with project teams (& 3rd party providers) to ensure strategic alignment and standards compliance.

  • Expected to have mastery of applications relevant to the legal industry sector
  • Knowledge of IT market and trends related to the legal industry sector
  • Knowledge and experience of working in ITIL and SAFe environments
  • Working practices and their application to improve delivery and business value
  • Security architecture principles, patterns and controls to be applied to on premise and cloud based delivery models


  • Hands on experience of designing within a hybrid and multi-platform environment
  • Hands on experience working with Enterprise Architecture tooling and maintaining the data within the repository
  • Hands on experience with the selection, design and implementation of outsourced technology Software as a Service
  • Experience of working within a TOGAF framework and able to apply this in practice
  • Experience working with modern API Management services and micro-services architecture
  • Experience with cloud based delivery, when appropriate to use and implications of a multi cloud environment
  • Exposure to a range of project delivery methodologies
  • Extensive technical background preferred with a wide range of experience across IT domains. Expected to have a firm grasp of the Microsoft technology stack but experience of non-Microsoft and open source is advantageous
  • Industry standard certification preferred
