THE ROLE

As an Accounting Controller at DLA Piper in Brussels, you will work in an ambitious organisation that is constantly evolving internationally and growing its people to meet the challenges. The Accounting Controller works closely with, and supports the Head of Finance Belgium, and acts as the contact point for all operational accounting activity. You will work and interact with internal stakeholders such as Lawyers, HR, IT, Business Development, other departments as well as with colleagues in our international network of offices, external parties such as banks, VAT and Tax authorities and accountants. You are responsible for the accurate and timely accounts period closures, VAT declarations and various management and financial compliance reporting. You will also be responsible for supervising the team to ensure that objectives are met.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor level degree in Accountancy (supplemented by VAT and/or Tax knowledge is a nice to have), have +5 years 'rounded' practical working experience in an accounting department and the desire to grow this new role and add value to the service offering of the team.

The successful candidate will need to undergo an assessment.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensuring the day-to-day operational activities in the Accounting department are run smoothly
  • Maintaining timely and accurate monthly cycles, quarterly and annual closures of accounts for internal and external reporting requirements
  • Overseeing the accurate and timely recording and reporting of Belgian GAAP statutory accounting for the production of VAT declarations (professional services) and corporate tax declarations
  • Involvement in year-end production of tax accounts, reconciliations of systems, and coordination of the audit
  • Monitoring of third party account monies (legal practice) and compliance reporting thereof
  • Involvement in and/or ownership of various internationally driven projects

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Bachelor degree in Accountancy (supplemented by VAT and/or Tax knowledge
  • +5 years' hands-on experience working in a finance department
  • Practical working experience with Belgian GAAP statutory accounting
  • A keen eye for detail, process oriented with strong Excel skills
  • Knowledge of Navision and PMS systems (or similar) is a plus
  • Excellent command of the Dutch and English language, spoken and written (French is a plus)
  • Analytical, communicative, proactive attitude and hands-on
  • Accurate, inquisitive, service minded and stress resistant
  • Takes responsibility and tackles tasks independently, but is also a team player
  • Structured, methodical and process oriented
  • Knowledge and experience in professional services are a plus
